Tour Diary - Part 22

Parked behind the Pageant Theater in St. Louis, after a triumphant night in Nashville!

Nashville was the one date we all anticipated being a little weird - the word was that the venue was not going to be great for us - City Winery, essentially a dinner theater.... rows of tables and dinner service before the show... wine flowing... It felt like a wedding reception... but when the lights went down and I came out, I suddenly loved it.  It felt like we were the entertainment at the Copacabana or something. We leaned into it... "Congratulations to the bride and groom!" later I brought up a couple and we played a terrible version of "Wonderful Tonight" as they slow danced.  At one point, I placed a can of beer on top of my amp, and it fell off EXPLODING behind me, onto Josh and Ellie's wall of basses, one of which she had just bought that afternoon!  She thought it was hilarious. If you don't get some beer on your bass in Nashville then what are you even doing?

We also had another crazy laugher, this time right in the front row... a sound I could hardly explain - a high-pitched howl, from a man. Mostly present during the standup set. I thought he might die at some point. It almost caused me to break. Who are you mister high pitch???

After the show, we rallied and walked down to Robert's Western World. In a sea of total shit that is Broadway in Nashville, Robert's is an Oasis of good old-timey country music.  It's where I head every time I can when in Nashville... cheap beer and fried food... (a couple of Miller High Lifes were 5 bucks! What? how?)  I was so excited for Conner to see the band. If you've seen Conner play you know he could pick with the best of em... and the bandleader, lead singer, and telecaster master might just be one of my favorite entertainers alive (i've seen him 4 times now, I guess) He's an incredible player and they do such tasty arrangements of songs you know. When they launched into "The Race Is One" I couldn't help but dance.   Conner and everyone was well impressed.

A few people who were at the show were there and gave us some respectful glass taps in appreciation and gave us our space - a contrast to when I was there way back when with Tim and Eric, and Brule.... I was there with John, having a blast when some drunk dummy kept pestering John for a picture. He had his dumb phone out, "come on, man. I gotta get a pic with you." I lost my temper with him, protective of my friend. "get the fuck out of here, man!"

Should be a good one tonight, big theater, should be about 800 or so people to make happy tonight. YIKES!
