Kurt Vile, Randy Newman, Vera Drew + After Hours (Ep 167 7/29/21)

How lucky were we to have Kurt Vile in studio, Randy Newman (or was it?) on the hothead hotline (41:59), and our old pals Uncle Phil (22:10) and Vera Drew (1:11:53) on the show this week!

Then for After Hours (1:47:03), KV graced us with a song ("Speed of the Sound of Loneliness"), along with some impromptu Velvet Underground jams with Tim, and of course YOU on Zoom.

End Card Art by Shannon Matthew Vanya

Note: This is the Patreon only mega show which includes the main show and After Hours all in one long broadcast. Enjoy!

This includes the LAST After Hours ever before the format changes to a free-for-all first hour and a Patrons-only second hour.

I clipped Kurt Vile’s cover of Speed of the Sound of Lonliness if anyone wants to revisit it here: https://youtu.be/iIJuEPbR2P4. I thought it was beautiful. It’s an unlisted video but I’m happy to take it down if The Holy Trinity / Kurt Vile want me to.

joe

also big UP to papa Bob! may he live long and healthy

This was such a fun ep- Kurt is a primo guest and the Randy call was great - I think it's time for me to do a Deep Dive on both of their respective catalogs finally! Also - have y'all reached out to Weird Al (Yankovic) to visit? He's such a sweetheart and so smart and funny and great on T&E ASGJ!

chaoserene

I have a 60 something year old Albanian coworker. Very nice person. He is going back to visit for vacation at the end of the month. I’ll have him spread the gospel of the Holy Trinity with my Drop Concert disk drive!

Eric Smith

I love this show

i think they knew he would possibly call in. the whole unsure thing was a bit i think.

Nicholas H.

Did they know randy was calling in or was it genuinely a surprise?

🖤Cassie🖤

Banger.

Jared Kelly

incredible. simply incredible.

creg

I laughed so hard when Phil called. Made my crappy day much better! “Just give him a regular hamburger and I’ll tell him it’s vegan”

🖤Cassie🖤

By the way, gang, in case you're interested -- the moment where I said something along the lines of Robt. Davi expressing "my concern" instead of "his concern", that is a direct result of the stroke. I do this all the time since it happened, and it weirdly is about mixing up pronouns. I'll often misuse "he/she" "my/your" "his/hers" "me/you" etc. It's bizarre. I should have pointed it out as soon as Tim noticed it for purposes of our conversation, but instead made a joke about it. That's just one thing, but I usually hide it OK.

Phil Braun

When are you guys running ??

Austin Setmajer

Make love to me Randy!

Grant Kozy

Yes. 100%.

Tim Heidecker

Yeah the Japan thing was a fire at the place that made the majority of the lacquer discs for the entire world which is the first step in making records. So that created a huge delay for everybody. -matt

Tim Heidecker

Kurt’s cover of Speed of the Sound of Loneliness stopped me in my tracks. Jesus Christ. You guys manage to stun week after week.

Keith Whamond

Thanks bud!

Phil Braun

wait?!? WAS THAT ACTUALLY RANDY?

Tom

if you haven't seen it already google pound house. next level

Julian Jules

The best idea

Julian Jules

Have to join in on the love for Philb. Was glad to hear from him and hope he gets out of his dire straits!

Julian Jules

phil braun is just the best. i've been listening from the very beginning and i swear i've never not laughed when he calls in. such a funny guy and integral to the show, imo. also, i'd be ok with kurt vile being the 4 member of OHL lol "the holy quadrilogy" . he just fits the dynamic perfectly. it's incredible how far this show has come in the last few years. i remember when it was just tim and doug with the bings and bongs on facebook live. tim would always talk shit about office hours and how it was a terrible show, and now look at it. he's got kurt vile in studio and fuckin randy newman calling in. i'm so glad he realized the potential of OHL because i've always loved it from the beginning.

Nicholas H.

That grimey jazz interlude…. Wtg dougy

joel mason

#handled

joel mason

Doug has a Lynch Jr thing startin to happen there…

joel mason

Ya look good Tim. Hair grows (back)

joel mason

This episode was an All Timer. A fun opening chat between the Trin, Matt, and Kurt, no duds from the Zoomers, and of course an unbelievable surprise with Randy, which you all handled brilliantly. It's the kind of show that makes me feel bad for anyone who doesn't know about the great Office Hours Live experience.

Maclaine

This is the episode i will show to my boomer parents. They Know Randy fuckin Newman.

joel mason

I believe the factory he is talking about may be (once) in Japan. I think there is another big one in Germany. But even before the one went kaput, there were only a handful of factories still making vinyl blanks

joel mason

Ha! Amazing -matt

Tim Heidecker

I love the main show and after hours in one video, makes it so easy to watch and keep the flow. This episode was one for the books

Jack

Is Phil Braun coming to OHL Live?

Cody S

Fantastic show! Holy shit Randy Newman & Kurt Vile. Thank you all so much!

Miguel

Have you heard of the Johnny Cash money machine? In the 80s he was on every bank machine in Canada! City of the Day ad reminded me of this: https://youtu.be/c8VWRPBJsRk

Friendly Rich

The St Vincent guitar looks a lot like the Roland synth guitar Kirin J. Callinan has been using live and on record for the past 2 years or so

Matt Vogels

Another A+ show!

Goose

A+ episode boys. ET WHERE ARE YOU?

Greenblood

I would love some talk of the Pgh vs. Philly accents. As in how both cities use "dude". The Pgh "dude" is a very versatile word in a way I've not heard in other cities. Specifically the emphatic, positive statement "Dhude, that show was TNT."

Noah Andrews

Oh man please get better soon Bob. One of my absolute heroes since the Mr Show days. I'm worried sick over here!

Di Drew

Was in the middle of a busy morning but managed to catch the randy Newman call on the live feed. Woah wah wee wah awesome stuff!!

Julian Jules

Probably depends on device etc but when you click/tap it should show you the title or something like that and that would link you out to YT

Tim Heidecker

Thanks for another amazing show! It makes me ridiculously happy.

Natosha Woods

Amazing to hear Randy Newman!

Mary-Anne McTrowe

Loved Dougs intermission slot, that E. T song was a banger

Rosie

Very chill show, thoroughly enjoyed!

Rosie

Fantastic show! Thank you so much for the good times! Cheers!

Taylor King

Hi, shows great. Quick question, it says "link to YouTube" - how do you do that? I really like the yt live chats!

Andrew

specifically leave it open to encourage new blood if they have commentary. if somebody is so broke they want to listen to a crappy mix just to get it free god bless em

Tim Heidecker

Don’t want to sound like a dick here, but you guys should change the zoom link each week - non Patreon watchers will still be able to join the zoom because this is the same URL each week and they know the time and date… I just think we should make it really hard for the non Patrons and not give them a free ride each week haha

John Galantini

I like having fun I like to laugh

Erich

The Kurt Vile puns, 10/10. So excited for today's show!

Mertie

Phil Braun should call in to talk about Rush. I think it is long overdue.

Dan Brenton

Have a great show. Hotheads get your dialing fingers ready.

Russell Fowler

I love this idea - should think about going independent of Patreon and have your own site!
