VB Gonna Be A DJ: 60s and 70s Brazilian, Vol. 1: So Nice And Calma

I still remember the first time I heard legit Bossa Nova music 20+ years ago. Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 are great and I was familiar with them at the time, but their songs were sung in English and generally were covers geared towards the American audience. I found a compilation of some of the most well known bossa/jazz hits (Girl From Ipanema-type stuff) that I wasn't exposed to. It also had a few of the original versions of songs that Sergio had covered. Jorge Ben's version of Mas Que Nada may have been on it. I stayed up late listening to that record with headphones on and I really connected with it, even though I had no idea what they were saying because everything was sung in Portugese. The way that language sounds when sung is beautiful and the general mood and ambience of so many of these songs is unlike much of what I had listened to until then.

That inspired me to dig around and, already being a huge fan of 60s psychedelia, I gravitated to the records from the Tropicalia movement. So much experimentation on those records. You just need to hear it. Wait until you hear the orchestral arrangement on the first track by Gilberto Gil. As I explored more of this music, I came across this guy named Marcos Valle. There's a chance you'd already know some of his earlier songs because he rode the Bossa Nova fad in America during the mid-60s and had some hits and lots of folks covered his songs. He evolved from there and by the early 70s had some pretty far out there records that are works of art. You'll find many of his songs on this mix. And there's also a new find for me, Tim Maia, who has two songs on here. From what I've been reading, he seemed to be a very interesting, explosive type of guy, even joining a UFO cult and recording two records in the 70s to honor it.

Allright, enjoy! If this is new musical territory for you, I hope it inspires you to dig in and explore this type of music. - Vic

Daniel Alcazar

Mr. BIV: this is a potent mix; thank you! I coincidentally connected with The Sloppy Boys this week about Marcos Valle! His self-titled album art looks like their aesthetic...and it RIPS!

Luke Cole

I Would LOVE tim to cover Marcos Valle - O Beato hahahhaha

Phil Copley

It's Marginália II. Check out the full record. You'll dig it if you like that song.

I love everything that being an Office Hours Patron brings, but these playlists are the things I end up going back to the most. I learn about so much music I had no idea about before, and this playlist is my favourite to date! I genuinely cannot wait for Vol 2, Vic!

Ben Goodman

Also if we're piling on with further recommendations, I will never get over Jorge Ben's "Lalari Olala"

Josh Rachbach

What a gorgeous flow of music, thank you! My mind did a backflip when "Vou Me Afundar Na Lingerie" came on. I had NO IDEA Beck sampled that for his Harry Partch song. It's the opening sample here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkQ5_AOLJ1A

Josh Rachbach

Cracked open my mind like an egg, Vic! This is some of the fresh energy I needed

Cameron Allen

Surprised there was no Novos Baianos!

Jesse Miller

Thanks Vic! That Os Mutantes track is amazing.

Jacob Kruse

Great mix! What’s the track name by Gilberto Gil at the start?

Mark Verling

That Tim Maia - Réu Confesso track sounds so much like Arthur Lee/Love's song "Maybe the People Would be the Times or Between Clark and Hilldale"

Dan Brenton

DJ Vic!!! I want more of this! Tropicalia, bossanova, and afrobeat are all so criminally underappreciated

IHaveHemorrhoids

Thanks Vic! I’m Brazilian-American and loved your picks! 🇧🇷

Joshua dos Santos

...I'd love a prog mix from yourself/Doug too

Phil Copley

A must-listen is the complete Sinatra/Jobim sessions from 1967. Frank is singing Jobim’s melodies during his peak as a singer. And the arrangements and jazz chords remind me of Pet Sounds at times. In 1967, Sinatra wasn’t “cool”, and he was trying new genres that he genuinely loved (imagine if he made a rap record?). Start with his takes on “Girl From Ipanema” and “wave.” https://youtu.be/bwcmGSUWGw4

Oopie Doopie

This is just what I needed for an afternoon heads down on the 'puter. Thanks Vic!

So good!!! I made a bossa inspired album a couple years ago. Luiz Bonfa was a big reference point. https://vinnieneuberg.bandcamp.com/album/songs-for-guitar

Vinnie Neuberg

What a great mix! Thanks Vic! My mom introduced me to Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 and I branched out from there, too. Are you familiar with Caetano Veloso's album "Transa"? Such a great sound.

Mike G

Arthur Verocai's self titled album is an absolute gem. He produced a lot of Brazilian classics as well.

jaymack

Nice selection of tunes -- love Marcos Valle. Also highly recommend Flora Purim, sort of later 70s vibes but all over many of the rare grooves from that era. London-based Mr Bongo and Soul Jazz Records got some great Brazil compilations if you wanna dig deeper.

Martin Degrell

May I recommend secos e molhados

Plibt

Matthew van Dam

Love these vibes. Thank you, Vic!

Annie Sway

Yes! Vic, I was just listening to Erasmos Carlos the other day and thought of you. Arthur Verocai is another great. His self titled record is one of the best ever! I'm excited to listen to this mix

dijon

Would love to hear Vic's voice after every few tracks like a real radio DJ.
