See kids, this is what happened back when franchises had "multiverses" that weren't diagrammed out my committees years in advance. Even setting aside that must of us in the Western world never got to play the Wonderswan games that Ryo originates in, it seems pretty obvious to me that nobody was seriously thinking about making the overlaps between their story and show's until it was already too late for it to make real sense.
