Okay, this probably won't make sense to anyone who doesn't have a VERY clear memory of what Tamers episode 13 looks like, and Lord knows I didn't remember any of this off the top of my head before re-watching it. But having done so, it's immediately obvious that somebody was desperately trying to save time and money on this one by doing some Evangelion-style long, flat shots. Yeah, I know comparing Digimon Tamers is a bit of a meme, but things got that way for a reason. Tamers clearly did borrow a lot from the earlier show, stylistically. The problem is, even when Evangelion is at its shortcut-taking-est, corner-cutting-est, elevator-riding-est, literally-photographic-the-story-boards levels of cheap... it STILL looks like it had a bigger budget than Digimon. When poor little Digimon tries to put the same trick of doing minimal animation and passing it off as a stylistic choice, it just doesn't work. That opening scene in the parking deck where the fight is "obscured" by the lighting is just embarrassing, and while stuff like the later shots of people standing around Hypnos HQ aren't THAT bad, they still don't have the detail to pull off the mood and atmosphere they'd need to get away with what they're trying to do.
...although not that I'm thinking about it, I do want to see somebody edit that one shot of the bridge bunnies searching for Calumon so that Carl is just standing there to one side.
ALSO! Just another reminder that the vote for deciding a new NON-Digimon-related weekly comic series is getting closer and closer to winding down! If you want to have any say in what I draw comics on after Dirty Pair is over, you're running out of time to do so!
