Virtually every cliche people think of when they think of Gainax is in effect in the final episode of Gunbuster, except this time they actually stick the landing in a conclusive and satisfying way. No budgetary collapse at the end, no psychological implosion mid-way through, no Island Arc; they just NAIL everything they set out to do with this thing. That's a rare thing in the Gainax filmography and should be commended.
But if you think I'm being a bit too positive here, there's still two more pages left to go...
