There's a real meta aspect to this, because I legitimately forgot that Max and Milia's meeting in this episode DIDN'T immediately lead to their infamous date. So my first idea for this comic, doodled out while I was still in the middle of watching, had "knife fight" grossly emerging out of episode 24's torso, chestburster-style... and then suddenly the episode was OVER and I realized I'd misremembered a few things. Now, to be fair to me, I WAS thinking "Wow, I remember the animation in that episode being a lot worse than this," which really should have been a dead giveaway. (But then, episode 23 got unexpectedly good-looking at the end, so it's fully possible that 24 COULD have gone bad out of nowhere). The point is, once I got this Don Hertzfeldt-ish idea stuck in my head, I I couldn't shake it, so here we go.
If that HADN'T happened, then this comic would probably have been about the arcade scene in one form or another, because WOW the animators were having fun in that one. Even beyond the Castle of Cagliostro shout-out, there's all the little creative flourishes in Max & Milia's game and the goofy characters in the crowd and the sheer overwhelming 80s-ness of it all... it's just golden era otaku indulgence at its most fun. Too bad I had to spend the whole episode thinking about the exact OPPOSITE of that, huh?
