Weekly Anime Comics: Slayers Next - page 2

Okay, since I don't think I'm doing a good job of explaining this (quite ironic), let's do this again: Episode 2 of Slayers Next begins with Lina's voice over providing a quick recap of what happened in episode 1.  However, underneath that audio, there's a montage of clips playing that show Amelia's entourage from Seyruun bringing her some luggage, allowing her to change out of the beat-up Princess clothes she had on in episode 1 and into the familiar white pajamas we're used to seeing her in.  I appreciate them actually showing these moments, because I'm ABSOLUTELY the kind of pedantic nerd who'd ask questions if she just suddenly appeared in a different outfit.  But at the same time, I also understand that an episode's runtime is limited, and NORMAL PEOPLE don't need this extra bit of continuity.  With that in mind, showing this unimportant bit of continuity during the same time that the episode gets its recap out of the way is an economic optimization of that limited time available.

...BUT YOU TOTALLY GET HOW I'D BE CONFUSED, RIGHT?  Decades of anime- heck, just TV in general- has conditioned me to assume that any clips playing under the "here's what happened last time" spiel are actually from that last time.  Add in the fact that these clips are both quick-cut and dialog free, and it honestly does LOOK like they're sniped out of a larger scene.  Finally, remember what I said last week.  I've re-watched the first Slayers a lot over the years, but this the first time I've watched Next since the very first time I saw the show.  It's entirely within the realm of possibility that there COULD have been a weirdly late final scene in episode 1 that I forgot to watch.  I actually have done that before...

I've been doing journal comics so long that I just provide narration for everything I do. I makes things easier.

Do you often say “Tum tee tum tum when watching anime”? If so that’s adorable!
