Added 2021-05-05 22:13:58 +0000 UTCOh yeah, we're going there. What, you though just because I haven't brought up the weirdness between Sakura and Yukito yet (emphasis: "YET") that meant that meant I wasn't gonna get into this? Oh no, we're going there. This is happening.
Just for the record, though, I'm not such a stick in the mud that I require absolutely all media I consume to reflect my own morally and ethical convictions. If I did, I'd be living under a rock in a cave on the moon. Also, I'm fully aware that writing something in a fictional, fantasy context in no way equals doing that thing or endorsing it in actual real life. Having SAID that, however, one must also acknowledge that CLAMP backed themselves into a corner on this one. The idealized/no judging attitude towards Rika and Mr. Terada is but one facet of the general "all love is good love" outlook throughout, and that itself is a facet of the "it'll all work out" mandate of the entire series, which is something CLAMP absolutely DOES want the audience to take with them in actual real life. If they're gonna pat themselves on the back for their "I'm okay, you're okay, we're all okay" posturing, only to then include OBJECTIVELY NOT OKAY stuff without any disclaimers or qualifying statements, that's grounds for some fair criticism. And to be clear, I'm NOT saying there should be a Very Special Episode about stranger danger in Card Captor Sakura. A huge part of the charm of the series is its light, cheerful, harmless mood. Bringing in icky Real World seriousness would just ruin the show's tone... which is all the more reason it shouldn't go introducing topics that absolutely should never be treated as light and harmless in the first place. It's a very tumblr-y "You didn't think this through, did you?" kind of writing, and I'm afraid we WILL be making fun of it some more before this series is through.
