See? Didn’t I tell you there was more of me blabbing on about music in your future? There is no escape from my fantasies of being a music journalist! Don’t worry, I’m still finding ways to tie these flights of fancy into Conventional Wisdom’s general “anime & stuff” theme, even if I’ll ALSO be somewhat indulging my obsession with playlists and organizing songs to fit a certain theme.
Have you ever listened to a song and thought “Man, how was this song never the theme to a show?” Clearly I have, because that’s what this new series of blogs will be! I’ve rummaged through my frankly stupid library of Japanese music and thrown together a short list of tunes I think really, REALLY should have been used in an anime at one point or another. Not an actual, currently-existing anime that already HAS a theme, mind you, that’d make things just a little bit too fanfic-y. Just a generic “this song would have been great for THIS genre of anime with THESE specific tropes” ramble, interspersed with me putting over why I like the song in the first place.
In case it didn’t come through earlier, this set of blogs will come out one song at a time. Yes, I’m totally looking for ways to stretch this content out, but also Patreon only seems to allow me to imbed one video per post. Yes, I’ll be posting a YouTube video for each song, so you won’t have to just use your imagination like you probably had to do on at least ONE of those Japanese CD blogs. Hopefully this’ll introduce a few of you to artists you’ve never heard before, because at least a few of the coming bands are fairly obscure, or at least have become so in recent years. All the more reason why some of these artists really could have used some anime coming along and giving them a bigger boost than my dinky little Patreon blogs will ever provide.
Oh, and just for the record, I’ll be talking about songs that I think would make good ENDING themes as well as openings, two very different breeds of song. The music that cools the audience down while the credits roll is just as important as the music that gets everybody fired up at the start. It’s only right to give both their due in my little fantasy soundtrack compilation.
And as long as I’m getting the housekeeping out of the way in this intro, I’ll just apologize in advance for if it turns out any of the songs to come actually WERE used in some show somewhere and I just didn’t know about it. My Google-Fu isn’t perfect, and Lord knows I haven’t watched every single piece of recorded media produced in Japan (YET) so it’s entirely possible that some weird bit of trivia will escape my notice over the course of the next ten blogs. I preemptively accept all scorn and mockery for being such a dumb dumb.
Lastly, just in case somebody decides to be a smart-aleck and ask: No, I’m not mention any non-Japanese artists in these blogs. Yes, I know we live in a world where “Roundabout” technically counts as an anime theme and blah blah blah, I don’t care. If I DID allow myself to pick from non-Japanese sources, this blog series would just be called “Why Every Anime Should Have A Theme By The Beatles” and I wouldn't be able to stretch that out for NEARLY as many installments.
