Conventional Wisdom: Giant Gorg - page 3

You thought I'd forgotten about this stuff, didn't you?  I wouldn't blame ya, I was hoping to get a few extra pages of Patreon stuff done before the December crunch started... but you just need to take one look at the AWA comics to see how that went.

But on to the point at hand: yet another reason I'm so glad to be watching a not-new anime right now.  Sometimes, it's the little things that make the classic stuff interesting.  The little bits of grit and debris on physical cells that make the visuals look "more real" on a subconscious level.  The unique blur and lighting effects that decades of CG effects still can't quite manage to do in the same way.  Or, sometimes, the bugnut crazy gibberish that can occur when a background artists who doesn't speak a word of English suddenly has to fill a western city scene full of signs and graffiti.  These days, a few rounds of copy/paste and Google Translate can take care of that for anybody with, at best, a few bits of awkward grammar here and there.  But back in the day, when all this had to be done by hand?  Oh boy, there was some GREAT unintentional entertainment lurking in the background.  Stuff like computer readouts that were actually the cast of Star Trek or subway stops that were all classic rock artists or big flashing signs that boldly declare "ALART."  And man, that trip across America is full to bursting with goofy stuff like that.  The various bits of misspelled or nonsensical signage are the most obvious point of weirdness, but the random graffiti all over New York is way more rewarding if you actually stop to read it.  Like, most of it is grammatically correct, but doesn't even remotely resemble actual graffiti ("God is a Dog?").  Oh, and at least one big, authentic F-bomb that I'm sure would have been a LOT of fun for the distributes if they'd tried to release a dub back in the day.

But my all-time favorite bit is a brief movie clip that shows a closeup of Edgar Allan Poe's grave marker.  For the most part, it's pretty accurate... except for the "Quoth the Raven: Nevermore" inscription, which is replaces with "Wise you were here."  It's got it all: the spelling is botched, it makes no sense contextually, and... honestly, it's one of the most awesomely morbid gravestone epitaphs this side of "Be seeing you soon."
