When you’re drawing a comic without dialog, you have to establish character via other means. Like, say, cluttered rooms. (By the way, I’m still conditioned to use “pro-wrestling fan” to indicate “tough meathead jock-type” even though that’s been demonstrably untrue for a good decade or two)
Also, I’m breaking the “no screentone” rule even more here. BAD ME! To explain, adding extra layers of shading and color takes a LOOOOT longer than it ever seems like it should. A single, uniform layer like this page isn’t too bad, but if I’d given in to temptation and tried to create a multi-layerd shroud of atmospheric darkness over the previous page (the house disappearing into inky black, the bright alien tech sticking out like a beacon) it would have added HOURS to the process… and hours more if I actually wanted to do it WELL. Even worse, that stuff is VERY tricky to rescale or print or webviewing. Ever seen one of my comics have that ugly white line effect all over the screen tone? That’s a page that was resized wrong (I’m sure this is more my fault for not knowing how to do this right, but knowing that doesn’t really help me do it any faster)
EDIT: I am personally insulted that spellcheck does not recognize "Gilb" enough to let me know that i'd misspelled the title of this page.
