Conventional Wisdom: Ichibancon 2016 - page 1
Added 2016-01-24 17:09:47 +0000 UTCMan, it's been a WHILE since we did some convention comics on Patreon, hasn't it? Well, here it is: the parts of Ichibancon 2016 you DIDN'T see in the main update!
The ambient music playing over the speakers at the Embassy Suites had been a source of great amusement in previous years. I mean, most hotels have SOME kind of calm elevator music playing in the background (which you can't hear because the con is too noisy to even hear yourself THINK) but it's usually a lot of Adult Contemporary ballads or, like, Celtic Woman or something. But this? No, this was straight up New Age Ambient unlash-your-inner-chakra-or-whatever soundscapes. And it's not that I don't like that kind of stuff (Harold Budd & Brian Eno are my go to relaxation music), it was just weird to go from being bombarded on all sides by Jpop & Kpop & people drunkenly singing Disney songs to suddenly hearinf a thirty minutes of meditation music.
...and then they got rid of it this year in favor of really obscure 80s songs. Like, REALLY obscure. As in, Flock of Seagulls songs OTHER than "I Ran" obscure. Honestly, it fit the mood of the con a lot better, which is ironic, since 95% of the kids at Ichibancon weren't even alive when this stuff came out.
