Mashups That Didn't Make the Cut - 5 Minutes of Flash

Comments

Thanks for the commentary, helps us understand the process.

Darin Kelly Nuse

I think this could work if you had a second instrumental track to add some melody; like the lead guitar fills from say, Sultans of Swing, or some of Steve Vai's stuff.

Kylie McInnes

Not sure...I’d have to look into that one.

Bill McClintock

Would Gerardo's Rico Suave work with this?

Hattrick

Thanks so much for your support!

Bill McClintock

Dude, I'm so glad I watched the video announcing this Patreon! I love your stuff! Best $3 I'm gonna be spending a month!

Hersh

Cool. Thanks.

Bill McClintock

I was a bit disappointed to find out this is not a mashup including Flash by Queen. :-( This one works a bit too well, maybe. To me it sounds like a song someone would actually come up with by themselves. Reminds me a of Living Colour or Faith no More. You did a great job finding this match of course but the genre cross-over you usually aim for is not that apparent.

Chemobob

Lol sounds awesome.

Bill McClintock

Good suggestions. Thanks!

Bill McClintock

Cool. I will check it out.

Bill McClintock

Very good insight. Thank you!

Bill McClintock

A lot of your mashups incorporate more from the song that provides the vocals, and this Pantera song just allows no space for anything else. It's much more sonically dense than most things you use. I think that contributes to the overall sense that the combination results in it coming out flat, and the lackluster delivery of the vocals doesn't help. Basically, there's just no variety, it just chuga-chuga-chuga-chuga's along.

Christopher Belson

Sounds promising! Totally different vibe, but DJ Schmolli's "Faith Message" (George Michael + Grandmaster Flash) is a cool groove using that same track.

Gary

It's actually not bad and I like it. I'm a big fan of Flash and "The Message" song. But if you're looking for some more intensity, you can try either Mystikal's "Shake It Fast (aka "Shake Ya A**)", Onyx's "Slam", Juvenile's "Back That Thang Up", or Cypress Hill's "Insane In The Brain".

Jared Ford

I want all of it - in every configuration! Pantera vocals with Furious Five backing track / trading verses with Grandmaster Flash playing over Pantera's track / plus Pete Fountain playing clarinet for the fills and the ocarina break from 'Wild Thing' as a solo. Woo-hoo!

Angus McMahan

Haha thanks!

Bill McClintock

I liked it!

Debra McClintock

Agreed.

Bill McClintock

Never heard that one. Pretty cool.

Bill McClintock

Beastie Boys is a good idea. I still need to do one with White Wedding!

Bill McClintock

Good call.

Bill McClintock

Yeah, that was pretty dull. It lacked oomph.

Matt Rose

Check out “Ring My Bell” by DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince. I don’t think the chorus would work, but I think the verses should. Since you like this chorus, maybe you could swap them out. Not sure, but thought I’d try and help!

David

I think it'd be worth it to try the other way around. Or maybe some DMX or heavier Eminem (though they're not really like Grandmaster Flash). Haha. Maybe Beastie Boys...also we need more Billy Idol please! You rock!

Hunter Draper

I agree about the vocals lacking intensity. Maybe if there was a way to double the vocals or putting a distortion on one track of vocals. I dunno - just kind of spitballing at this point.
