Ryan paced at the front of the RV, dirt crunching under his feet. Andi’s attention turned from Ryan’s nervous march across the road and back again to the narrow field of stars above her. Those mysterious trees were high and appeared to lean over the road, leaving little room for starlight.
Colin was comforting Andi, awkwardly leaned in his chair to loop an arm over her shoulders. She was nodding and crying, probably a complaint that blended Ryan’s sudden introversion and the fact that they might just miss Blaze.
“This is a real bummer, huh?”
Bailey found her again. Andi’s eyes lingered on the cotton blouse and the flower stitching around the loose string at the top of the neck, a tie that would reveal much of Bailey’s chest if one would only pluck it open.
“Yeah,” Andi agreed. “The trees are weird, right?”
“Spooky,” she corrected. “I have a real bad feeling, Andi, and I don’t know why. But I’m all itchy and freaked.”
Andi took Bailey’s hands and wrapped them in hers. “Probably some national park or something we didn’t notice when we came in. We’ll be back in boring cornfields soon enough.”
Bailey used the grip to tug Andi closer. Close enough for that spark, still floating between them, to catch at last.
Bailey’s lips were full and soft and Andi met them with the weight of all the imagined kisses before. Kissing Baileys was a release, her soul lifted by the final fulfillment of a thousand wishes. Then Bailey’s hand was on Andi’s shoulder and Andi’s leg was snuggled between Bailry’s thighs and their hold on each other was full and needy and threatened to tip into desperate.
“I’m sorry. You two are so super cute!”
Andi and Bailey snapped away from one another and turned to face the voice that came out of the darkness. At first a ghost, but then light found the girl as she emerged from the woods. She was thin and fragile, each step long-legged and bending like a dancer’s. The tight-fitting top, the flare of tattered skirt and a strange glittering dance around her, almost like fireflies accompanied her journey, all of these contributed to a sense of otherworldliness. All that inside an impossibly pretty package.
“Sorry!” the pretty girl repeated, her hands held before her to show she meant no harm. Colin and Chastity noticed her arrival and were turning to her, too, but Ryan was still too far, too deep in his own head. “I saw the light and wanted to help. I’m Juno. May I be of service?”
“What kind of homeschooled bullshit is this?” Bailey whispered from the corner of her mouth. Andi squeezed her hand hard to quiet her, but there was no denying the girl was weird.
“What are you doing out here?” Colina asked, pushing his chair closer to the line with Andi and Bailey. Chastity was following behind, but slow to get up.
“I live out here,” she replied and giggled, a slender finger tucked under her lower lip. What pouty and inviting lips they were. None ho had seen Juno could quite look away from her.
Ryan noticed the others and came fast around the corner of the RV’s nose. “What the hell is everyone looking at? Oh. Hey. Do you have a phone?”
“No. No phones here. But I can take you to Mother. She can help. She’s wary of outsiders, though.” Clouds moved across Juno’s teacup features. “I guess she might help if just one of you came with me. Want to come see?”
“Why don’t you just go tell your mom that we need help,” Ryan countered, “And tell her to call whatever hillbilly grapevine you have out here to get us a tow truck. Please and thank you.”
“No no no.” Juno shook her head, making the sandy bob of hair curtain around her head. “Mother won’t believe Juno. Juno makes up stories sometimes.”
“I’ll go.”
Andi looked, shocked, at Bailey. “No, you can’t.”
“It’s fine. And if we want to get to the show, we can’t stand around all night. I’ll go with her and see if we can find somebody with a phone in their cabin or whatever. I’ll be back soon.”
“I’ll go,” Ryan offered.
“No, you stay with the group. You know something about driving this thing.” She turned to Andi. “And you stay with Colin. I’ll be back soon. Promise.”
And Bailey kissed her in front of everyone. Andi was shocked at the boldness of it and then thrilled. That was Bailey saying they were a thing, and there was nothing more that Andi wanted than to have a thing with Bailey. The kiss ended as each must and Mailey pulled away, leaving Andi’s arms emptier than they had ever felt.
“Alright, Juno, let’s go see Mama.”
Andi watched as Juno took bailey by the hand. They were talking low to one another. Andi could hear the buzz of their speech, but not the words. The dark wrapped around them, tugged them into the trees, and soon they were gone. Andi shivered.
