Exclusive Release - "Captain Ulysses"

Two nights ago I slept uneasy. I keep waking, worrying about bills and money, and lost income, and the way the industry had changed into something that no longer paid for music.  Things that always feel out of my control, that could end everything I have made. I'd wake, and worry about something for an hour, and then fall back asleep and dream another nightmare...

The final nightmare was about a old man, standing on the beach in a storm. Behind him was his ship, shattered on the rocks, and he was drenched, and bloody and angry. In futility of it all had driven him insane, and so each time a wave came at him, he'd strike it with his fists, which had no effect but to drench him, and bring him a little closer to drowning.

Finally, around 4:00am, i woke and wrote these lyrics. That day I recorded the song, and today I finished it. his is an exclusive release, and this song has been heard by nobody but me, Kristina, and now you.

"Captain Ulysses"

Captain Ulysses
Stood on the shore
exhausted  and angry and spent.

The sea had recently
taken his ship
He was salty and bloody and bent.

Each wave struck him,
as angry he yelled,
And he swung his fists at the sea.

But rentless they battered
and turned him and drenched him,
And knocked him down to his knee.

"I've fought against you
nearly all of my life!
and the battle has wearied my soul."

But the sea pulled back
for one final hit,
then it struck him and swallowed him whole.

Fighting The Ocean,
the turbulent motion
was pointless as oceans transform

Breaking and crashing
consuming and bashing
change or you’ll  lose to the storm

Each wave struck him,
as angry he yelled,
And he swung his fists at the sea.

rentless they battered
and turned him and drenched him,
And knocked him down to his knee.

"I've fought against you
nearly all of my life!,
and the battle has wearied my soul."

But the sea pulled back
for one final hit,
then it struck him and swallowed him whole.

Fighting The Ocean,
the turbulent motion
was pointless as oceans transform

Breaking and crashing
consuming and bashing
change or you’ll  lose to the storm

Fighting The Ocean,
the turbulent motion
was pointless and useless
it mocked his devotion
for oceans  and currents
will ebb and will always transform

Breaking and crashing
consuming and bashing
destroying direction
invoking rejection
change and transform
or you always will lose to the storm

Thanks!

Good character piece, Robert!

Benjamin Adler

I missed the bassline on the first listen. Subtle and cool!

James Magruder

Thanks! I was proud of that myself. One of the themes of the song is the varying conditions of the sea. So I was sort of making a nob to different waves at different frequencies throughout the song. Another example of this is that the bass line is in 3/4, but the rest of the song is in 6/8.

Very nice. I like how the rhythms start out clashing and then kinda synch up.

James Magruder

Thank you for this great song! LOVE!

Laurie Bell

I LOVE IT! TY for the song! <3

An interesting twist, I think I get it. I've been in the waking in the night worrying state many times. I know that feeling of just spinning on thoughts, slipping to sleep again, and then the dream. Ugh. Like many, I didn't realize that I should buy directly from your site at first, and I hate that the money I spent didn't all go to you. I've learned, and I hope others will too.

Kirsten Weispfenning

Interesting. I'd love to hear this done as a duet.
