Added 2017-04-02 23:31:01 +0000 UTC"BLOWING OFF STEAM: ANACHRONOMICON MIX!"
Steampunk has changed a lot since the early days. At the beginning, it was a lot of edgy artists in tiny little clubs, doing all this super cool stuff. Ariel's, iron sculptures, vaudevillian music, etc. This was before it became the fodder for reality shows, "I'm dressing as a steampunk for halloween!", and corporate marketing platforms. Not there there is anything wrong with those things, mind you, it's just it was a weird transition to go through: underground artist movement to mainstream weirdness.
In the begging it was Abney Park, and maybe a few dozen artists around the world making steampunk. Everybody knew everybody, and almost everybody was super cool.
Then came the next wave of steampunks. The self proclaimed authorities, that told everybody we had been doing it wrong all along. They set rules, and made everybody angry, and 99% of the edgy rebellious artists just...disappeared.
"But the years flew by, an some gears fell off..."
So, one day, I'm standing in a crowd of strangers...all of which know me...known of which I know...and I don't see any steampunk artists. I see "people dressed up as a steampunk", like, a costume theme as opposed to "people who are steampunk artists", and it sends me into this freakout.
"Where'd all my friends go? Where all the edgy artists and inventors go? Were are the ultra cool dancers, and aerialists, and and and..."
"all alone, in a crowd, of strangers who all know me."
I went home, and wrote this song.
"Blowing Off Steam"
Where's the tattooed muscle men
With furled brows a-furling'?
Where's the buxom fashion queen
With glittered curls a-curlin'?
Where's the angry nomad minstrel
Growlin' out a lullaby?
Where's the edgy circus folk?
Or have they said goodbye?
Where's the soiled and rusty builders
Welding iron sculptures?
Where's the clockwork ballerinas
Circling like vultures?
Where's the darkened cabaret
Filled with new nostalgics?
Where has everything I loved gone?
The loss is tragic!
All alone in a crowd
With strangers who all know me
And I try to be friends
But there's no one here who shows me
Should I run?
Should I hide?
Should I change my life completely?
Should I hold me inside?
Or keep my anger hid discreetly?
Where's the pretty fire folk
Spinning wands a-blazin'?
Where's the muscled aerialist
In the sky amazing?
Where's the dreadlocked cowboy
Head-to-toe in ancient leather?
Where's the pretty painted ladies
Behind their fans of feathers?
All alone in a crowd
With strangers who all know me
And I try to be friends
But there's no one here who show me,
Should I run?
Should I hide?
Should I change my life completely?
Should I hold me inside?
Or keep my anger hid discreetly?
Where's the slender flapper girls
In silken gowns and pearls?
Where's the threadbare waltzers
Paintin' the floors in curls?
Where's my life-confirming friends
Or did I ever have them?
Where's the brazen, angry artists?
Tell me what replaced them!
All alone in a crowd
With strangers who all know me.
And I try to be friends
But there's no one here who shows me.
Should I run?
Should I hide?
Should I change my life completely?
Should I hold me inside?
Or keep my anger hid discreetly?

Although I have been a huge fan since Lost Horizons was released, what astonished me was Anachinomicon, where we got to hear the story BEHIND the lyrics. And now hearing the story BEHIND Blowing off steam is just perfect... hearing the stories.. like the story behind VICTORIA brings them to life in a way nothing else can....THIS is what make the band real to fans...not JUST the music..THIS is the way to connect with us...Real fans don't want to be just entertained... they want to feel connected !... keep this up...it's perfect! :)

2017-04-07 12:28:13 +0000 UTCI had one little Celtic Miss sniff at my wares. "They are pretty, but they aren't 'period.'" I just smiled and said, "They are steampunk. They are outside 'period.'"

2017-04-04 01:18:44 +0000 UTCChange was always there and change will always be there. The world's moving, even in our small subcultures. You know, I'm a goth; second generation goth to be precise, since I grew up in a home full of albums by Dead can Dance, The Cure and others. And I think those conflicts you describe in steampunk have been in the goth culture as long as I know it. Being a formerly gothic band yourself (I still *love* your old albums just as much as the new ones, you know) you've experienced this for yourself. And yet - gothic culture still exists, and even occasional commercialisation waves couldn't destroy it. There always have been and there always be those, who oppose such changes - by putting even more focus on doing stuff for and by themselves. Punk was exactly this type of reaction to the changes happening in rock music; and since, via The Cure, punk is one of the ancestors of dark wave culture and music, this rebellion lies in our roots. We have always prevailed and we will always prevail. In the long run, any conflicts, schisms and splits lead to peacefully coexisting branches of the same tree. Never has the diversity of dark wave been this big; and yet I strongly believe I'll live to see it become even more diverse. I don't know if this is true to you personally, but many goths-turned-steampunks I know turned to steampunk seeing it as "the truer gothic" (as in "less commercial"), and just like this I guess we'll see steampunk grow its own branches. Don't let it discourage you, since in the long run we'll all gain from it. Just keep an open mind about it - and I'm talking to everybody here. Respect other people's choices. Neither "you're historically inaccurate" nor "that's not steampunk, that's reenactment" are fair and helpful. We all find our personal freedom in this. Whether old-school-goth, gothic lolita, folk metal fan, death metal fan, dieselpunk, steampunk, industrial fan... We're all parts of one family, and our diversity is our strength. Just look at rappers and hip-hoppers for comparison: They're barely distinguishable and yet very hostile to one another, while we're so big and great and diverse... "...don't let 'em check you, they're sucking the wrong brew. The cowards should not steer your life by their own fear..." Do what you want to do and let others do what they want. Live and let live. Just be kind and respectful and open.

2017-04-03 00:20:32 +0000 UTC"Your attire is not historically accurate!" Some crap like that. New flash: Steampunk ISN'T historically accurate. Thats exactly the point of alt-history.

2017-04-03 00:16:39 +0000 UTCit was quite wonderful if short lived and now gone to not but memories and pictures thanks to financial issues. I hope you find the steampunk you enjoyed again one day and not the facsimile I seem to see most lately

2017-04-02 23:39:34 +0000 UTCah captain I wish you'd been around my area about two years ago we had a small steampunk convention with a few local artists I feel you would have loved including a man called scarecrow who takes advantage of his stutter when he sings his songs a small circus group doing acts all three days as well as a few others all wonderful people who to me embodied the steampunk artist
