For your fourth free song, I'm giving you the title song of our latest album, "Under The Floor, Over The Wall".
When I wrote this song, I had an interesting goal. Fans often talk about liking "story songs", but when I think of the story songs I know, they aren't really stories at all. A story has to have a protagonist, and challenge of some sort, the protagonists efforts to accomplishment, and a conclusion. Most story songs I knew really just decribed a charactor, and his life. So I set about to write a song that tells a complete story, from introduction, to explaining charactors, the charactors challenge...the whole shebang.
I also wanted to have a dark threatening sounding song that completely tranformed inself into a happy song for the happy ending. I heard Sting do this in his song Ghost Story, and I was completely blown away. So I set about writing my own.
"Under The Floor, Over The Wall."
Two Small Girls
under The Floor
Under The Weather
Under The Shadow of a Darkened...
Behind closed doors
living in secret
living in fear
nearly forgotten
as they hide down there
families hide,
families dying and their starving and their poor
from the day they first hide
and they had no friends,
they had no love, and they dreamed of a day they could wake from this tomb
Here the cries of the kids above you
Here the joy you can never have
feel the pain of your empty coffers
echoing hole rips your heart in half
And so they left
broke through the bonds
broke through the floor,
and ran to the roof tops were they felt
wind on their face
they looked through the darkness
and the saw past the fog
to the edge of the wall
then a shadow fell,
something above
something that hunted,
so they ran and the ran from the night and hide in the ground
but the creatures came,
deep in their home,
found mother dying,
and the girls couldn’t hide
So they ran to the wall,
looked out in the blackness,
saw only stars
where every they looked
Brought with them a kite
they told from the toyshop
held on to the string, and held on to it tight
and the beast came again,
it came for behind them
So the girls ...closed …their... eyes,
…held... their …breath...and ... jumped.
And they flew
far into the blue
and they flew
over grassy fields, and trees
