Episode 651: Marvel vs. Capcom

Hey there Feit fans, it's me, Diamond Feit. I trust you're also fight fans because we're following up episode #607 with a hearty conversation about Marvel vs Capcom. Last time we covered the multi-year build-up to the inter-corporate crossover and now it's time for the main event: 3(.5) games over the course of 13 years, each released during a very different climate in the medium.

Kevin Bunch and John Learned join me to examine roster choices, multiple control schemes, and a quick recap of all things Marvel in the 90s. Also I know I make a provocative statement during the plugs but don't forget you're getting Early Access to this podcast; the 18th is next week!

Absolutely loved this one…I had totally forgotten about the Ultimate MVC3 perfume because I didn’t actually get the game until I got a PS4 around 2016/2017 so I just started with the best version and they didn’t catch me with the double dip! Also any combo with Chun-Li and Spidey is gonna be a great time!

Ultimate MvC3 added a Heroes & Heralds mode via an update a few months after release. In this mode, players could equip cards that give boosts to their teams, such as healing, continuous X-Factor, and poison attacks. They could then take their team online where they would fight as "heroes" or "heralds" (of Galactus). I recall that one faction was declared the "winner" each week but I can't find anything on the wiki to back that up. It was a neat feature, but after a few months the online scene was dead. I love UMvC3's roster and all the easter eggs and care that went into it, but the online play, which was decent for the time, feels unplayable these days. Also X-Factor level 3 is so overpowering it can make the first 2/3rds of the match feel irrelevant and makes for unsatisfying tournament matches.

Ah, you're far too kind, thank you. Don't worry, I took no offence; I'm only too willing to share some of my thought process regarding this sort of thing should any opportunity arise.

No shade on you, Greg. You do a fantastic job editing these episodes. In particular when it comes to the musical interludes, they’ve really taken a step up in the time you’ve been doing the editing.

I actually got to meet Cal Dodd, Wolverine himself, a couple months ago! He's a great guy and we talked a bit about the games, the late Kevin Conroy, and more. He signed my copy of MvsC. I'll post it in the Discord.

Naturally, I did consider incorporating the character select music, but having already used an excerpt from a cover version of the song by the 8-Bit Big Band earlier this year (Episode 596: Video Game Lyrics), I decided to focus on the stage themes instead. In particular, I wanted to help demonstrate the observation made during the discussion regarding how the Stage BGM compositions seem far too laid back to match with the frenetic nature of the gameplay.

Excellent episode. My only complaint is that the iconic MVC2 character select tune wasn’t played.

Love this. I’ve got my after school kids playing UMVC3 and they’re DIGGING it
