On the left is a Harbor Seal of the Rhode Island Train of Artillery, 1777.
The Harbor Seal, the State animal of Rhode Island. She's holding an artillery sponge. By the late 18th century, artillerymen were considered elite troops. In an age of widespread illiteracy, soldiers who could do the geometric calculations necessary to place a cannonball on target must have seemed almost as wizards. She is wearing a full length regimental coat and half leggings, which only cover halfway up the shin. This is to keep stuff from going into the wearers shoes. Full length leggings secured with buttons, or wool leggings where also popular.

In the middle is a Beaver of the 5th New York Regiment, part of the New York Line, 1777.
The Beaver is the State animal of New York. This is what soldiers in the 5th NY would have appeared during the time of the British assault on Fort Montgomery. It was a horrible engagement, with two-thirds their number killed or captured after a grueling day-long battle. She is wearing off white stockings, and weskit (vest), walnut breeches. A New York regimental short coat. Note the sideways pocket flap, this was more than likely just decorative and not functional. With a cartridge box on her right and bayonet scabbard on her left. The pewter buttons on this coat would have had New York on them. Her shoes are standard buckled shoes, which as the war progressed would be something less soldiers would have access to as supply lines where strained. She holds an early US Flag nicknamed the Betsy Ross Flag and French provided Charleville musket.

On the right is an American Foxhound of the 1st Continental Light Dragoons 1777. The 1st Dragoons were formed in Virginia, and while Virginia does not have an official State Animal, they do have a State dog, the American Foxhound. She wears a regimental short coat as most mounted soldiers did, it is shorter than traditional regimental coats so it would not get in the way while mounted. It is different in style to the New York Regimental coat. Her cartridge box in on her front for easy access while mounted. Remember Dragoons have carbine muskets they would have to load and fire from horseback, which was difficult to say the least. She wears full length boots with spurs, which aid the wearer in riding but are rather expensive to manufacture. These traditionally would be considered officers boots. But special units such as dragoons and other mounted units would be issued them as well. She wields her French pattern dragoon saber, her scabbard on her left and a carbine sling on her right. Dragoons where considered mounted infantry, and could perform the role of cavalry and infantry. But do neither role particularly better than the traditional role. They made excellent scouts, scrimmagers, and made excellent police to dispose of civil unrest and smugglers.
