Episode 645: The Best and Worst of 16-Bit Horror

Last year, we explored the NES era's few horror games and ranked them on their general spookiness levels—given the standards of the time. And now we're back to do the exact same thing for a whole new generation of consoles! This week on Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Kole Ross (of Duckfeed.tv), Diamond Feit, and Drew Mackie (of Gayest Episode Ever and Thrilling Tales of Old Video Games) as the crew unites to discuss a magical time when horror games could have evocative titles like "Decap Attack" and "Zombies Ate My Neighbors."

Howie Scream > Wilhelm Scream

Apparently in Zombi 2 they just.... drugged a shark and that's how they kept it from killing the zombie actor. It was a different time lol

Michael Castleberry

I can guess Nosferatu got its name because all the Castlevania games are named after Dracula in Japan.

Faux Macho

Fun Zombi 2 tidbit that Bob will probably appreciate: One of the actresses who meets a particularly unpleasant end was the wife of Arthur Rankin of Rankin/Bass fame

Drew Mackie

Astute observation

Drew Mackie

Should we, would we, could we consider Super Metroid a spooky Halloween game? I mean, that atmosphere, the loneliness, our sweet melty boy, Crocomire.

Nuno Amaral

Castle decorating sim. Must be.

Nuno Amaral

Right, you over seas people would know it as, Akumajō Dracula "Vampire Killer" Kawaii desu.

Jordan Vickers

What's "Castlevania"?

Stuart Gipp

Can confirm.

Stuart Gipp

Stu is the man screaming every 8-13 minutes

Bob Mackey

Between creating a Decap Attack comic and the Amiga classic It Came from the Desert, not having Stu present was a slight bummer.

Andrew O.

I'd never heard of this game before y'all had talked about it today, so I appreciate the new recc to try on my SNES. Love that K-A ESRB rating. Lol

Joseph

the music is from Nosferatu on SNES, for the record (DF)

Retronauts

Zombi 2 talk always welcomed. Also, it looks like the zombie is doing capoeira when it’s fighting the shark.

Rasheen Jordan

It’s bound to happen someday

Diamond Feit

I was just about to post how the screaming score guy got me every time right before Drew made the same comment.

littleterr0r

Top notch crew!

I love the transition at 1:09:50 from Bob's Super Mario esque upbeatness, to screaming death and industrial existential dread track "And the score for this iiiissss 21! 😃" *dread*

Joseph

I would love to talk about castlevania on here.
