207.5 Newsletter

Egads! First rats, and now birds?! What is this world coming to! Well, I'm glad that this Patreon is a safe haven for us to take refuge from all of the rats and birds of the world and read the weekly newsletter...

Haha, all jokes aside, welcome back to another newsletter. Typically, we'd cover the movie that I didn't get a chance to watch on the following week's Aftershow (One Night Only), but since we had a vaulted conversation that took place when our guest Matthew David Wilder was in the studio, I just had to unlock it. Don't worry, you guys! One Night Only will make its re-appearance on episode 208.5 ... but before I get ahead of myself, let's get on in to this week's episode!

As a lot of you may know, film photography is my main hobby. I shoot 35, 110, and polaroid -- and man, I love my polaroids! I'm the proud owner of 99% of the discontinued color frame stock ... I went a little crazy when they discontinued it, don't look inside of my fridge! I'm always super excited to get my camera out and snap a picture, especially when we have a guest in the store.

Now, the guys didn't watch The Birds all together -- but a discussion occurred before we started taping the main episode. Obviously each and every one of us has seen The Birds, so the guys had a quick chat about it. Even though I was silently listening to the conversation (but not jumping in), I went ahead and picked up a tape to complete my Video Archives collection.

One of my favorite features on this box is how they put Tippi's name as "Tippi" Hedren to really solidify the fact it's a nickname. Also, it may be common knowledge -- but I was surprised to be reminded that Melanie Griffith is Tippi Hedren's daughter and Dakota Johnson's grandmother.

I also really love when boxes highlight facts about the movies. 370 trick shots, 32 shots in the final scene, and 3 years of prep! Oh, and there's where you can find "Hitch" and "Tippi"!

Yikes! I've been shocked at how many listeners have commented that they understand how Peter Weller in Of Unknown Origin feels, as they have also been battling a rat infestation! My heart and prayers go out to all of you ... and hope that your battle with the rat ends before your house is torn apart!

My box comes from the now defunct chain Hollywood Video and features the picture perfect family ripped apart by a rat!

Honestly, the front of the box has absolute zero mention of a rat on it and makes it seem as if it's an alien that he's fighting ... and there's no mention of a rat on the back of the box until three quarters of the way down!

I like this copy a lot though, because I can totally read the line "If you think that a rat isn't a formidable enemy, think again." in Quentin's voice, while Roger's voice takes over for "Rats chew constantly, cutting even through lead and concrete. They've survived famines, plagues, A-bombs, and have outlives thousands of other species."

Now, admittedly, my box for Funeral For an Assassin is nowhere as cool as my "boyfriend box" that Quentin owns. It's kind of crazy how much different a box can make you think about a movie.

The back of the box does a good job at making this movie exciting, but I feel like ... well ... it leaves out a few things that may be helpful to draw an audience in. But maybe sometimes being vague and not giving it all away is better?

Well, that is this week's newsletter. I'm sure you guys have already figured out the clues. Hey, some people in the community chat saw my Instagram story where I teased the fact that there may ... or may not ;-) ... be a movie we're covering in the next few episodes on February's Bev calendar. So go check it out and make your guesses!

xoxo gala
