Bonus Christmas Mailbag

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Since the main episode was released in full, we at Video Archives wanted to give the Patrons an additional gift as a thank you for all of your support.

So let’s get cookies and milk, sit down by the fire, and listen in as Gala reads some letters from listeners.

CineFile on Sawtelle blvd in LA is a good place to rent

And there was me thinking I was too late to contribute but how on earth hasn’t anyone picked THE STONE KILLER?! (and we’re all well aware of QT’s penchant for gritty seventies cop flicks) 10 To Midnight would be a worthy secondary/consolation tho

Regan Piper

Gonna have to be that guy, but when Q is talking about MCA, he is actually talking about Magnetic Video, the initial incarnation of what became 20th Century's label - they had the first licensing deals with UA and ABC for THOMAS CROWN and STRAW DOGS respectively. MCA did have their own unique branding for a while - their first batch of Universal releases would put the title up top, the key art in the middle, and their logo at the bottom. Then they went to a conventional full bore key art (minus credits) on the front.

For the Bronson movie for sure Death Wish 2 or 3.

Chris Bumbray

For Bronson talk, how about one of his early ensemble films like Big House, U.S.A? I have a soft spot for that film having lived a few years in Southern Colorado near Canon City and the Royal Gorge, where the film takes place.

Kevin William

Quentin talks at length about Kinjite on the Pure Cinema Podcast final films episode. It's a great listen!

Kevin William

I've really come around to liking Death Wish V. There are some pretty brutal, nasty moments in it (nothing compared to Death Wish II, however), and Michael Parks is aces in it! Also, any movie that features death by acid pool is fucking alright in my book!

Kevin William

Imagine being a seller on eBay and seeing you get an order from Quentin Tarantino

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and happy holiday! Back at the shop today working and catching up on listens, and HOLY SMOKES!!! My question about video box branding got answered! What a great bonus Christmas gift. Glad you all enjoyed the stuff!

Dan Barbour

I think you sent in a second set of them, which I’ll give out to the guys when everyone’s back from the holidays! Thanks for the Bronson fun.

I am the maker of the bootleg Bronson goodies! Happy to hear the gifts arrived in time for Xmas. This only goes to show Virginia that, yes, there really is a Santa Claus!

Just a note for people who aren't familiar with the term: if you wonder why your area doesn't have "Swap Meets," then you probably call them "Flea Markets." A small detail that I learned when I moved out of L.A. and confused people with what I thought was a fairly common term. Shout out to the swap meets of my youth: the terrible Sundown swap meet at the now demolished Sundown Drive-In in Whittier; and the still-running Santa Fe Springs Swap Meet at the old (but occasionally functioning) La Mirada Drive-In.

Mark Ibarra

Really enjoy hearing about these one of a kind well-timed gifts today. For Bronson suggestions maybe Death Wish 4 or 5? Watched them recently and found their seemingly low-budget/ straight-to-video aesthetic (in spite of having had a robust budget and theatrical release) strangely enjoyable. I'm lucky to live in an odd town that still has a video rental store/museum, so Christmas shout-out to Movie Madness in Portland, Snoregon. QT mentioned them on last year's "Jet Benny" episode, and it's a great place to check out if you're in the area. Re this podcast, I've found tapes there for rent like "Amsterdam Kill", "Dirty Hands", "Baxter" and "Fever Pitch".

Wonderful Gift 🎁 Perfect

Ghost Wolf 🐺

If you were to discuss a Bronson movie on the podcast, I would suggest either Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects or Hard Times, or BOTH. Maybe do 3 Bronson titles?

Andrew Lapointe

NOTE: Audio updated for latest version. If you re-listen, you'll notice a few subtle differences, but the main body of the episode remains the same.

I confess to knowing scant about Mr. Bronson’s career. I was too young for his first movies and then thought I was too old (I.e. cool) for his later ones. Where to begin?

Kevin

Merry Christmas everyone, let us know if your question got featured! Lots of mail to come. xoxo gala

Definitely chato's land, Gala, my old mentor Gerard Wilson wrote the screenplay!!! My mind would be blown off you covered that movie 👍✌️❤️

I really need to get around to watching Domino - both for the context to listen to the podcast mentioned here, but also because I am related to Domino and Laurence Harvey through my grandfather.

Kevin LC

Re Bronson movies, it’d be amazing to hear you guys cover ‘Mr Majestyk’ on the show. Have a cool Yule, everybody!

Brendan Almond

Merry Christmas everyone

Michelle O'Toole

It’s always so fun to hear Quentin discover the internet. At the rate he’s going, season 3 he’ll be boasting about how he’s using AskJeeves to get his Vinyl records

Keno Vera

Ken Russell’s pizza would have baked beans on it!

I found the Quentin/ Richard Kelly chat on Tony. https://content.libsyn.com/p/b/6/1/b615bbca340ca18f/WritingforTonyScottAQuentinTarantinoandRichardKellyQandA.mp3?c_id=4888458&cs_id=4888458&response-content-type=audio%2Fmpeg&Expires=1735121707&Signature=Ig~srYsrQVmTnr3K0MATwtcPobNZGkrmiediO1Tmm5NNjrk1Tg-wNo-2MKG8bTsou6eyCX7znbF9A8eZ~WaELI3MUH2Q-34VIu7LktqcyfsgGRZOzzqEzy~ZxIgBwDfXX5HhLfJ1MGb~K9XJdttN-Hj1wziQ1r61Xb71rDbrqpHwduP2opoo4GkEWm6nGsNK~SRDA4l6pV9O5N73H~q8IY8gBUgEind41V57HoKTouGB6Qjw3JTDlsuoV21NVF9dBjVX1GZsRfL2~BlMYl5mN8nI02lbBgK3S3ZLaEsmtjjHOwclUsNy~n2cfFLJ16MuxF8IF3jXLS9RYRwLpumQYA__&Key-Pair-Id=K1YS7LZGUP96OI
