VACC 12/23/2024 Newsletter

Hey everyone!

Since Matt and I discuss the physical media that's playing at the Cinema Club, I thought I'd start publishing a mini newsletter in case you wanted to follow along. If you like this newsletter and would like to continue it moving forward, make sure to let me know in the comments below. Over in the Patreon chat, you guys voted to have this newsletter be separate from the weekly podcast newsletter, so here we go!

Before I get into the media of the week, we had quite a happening at the Vista the other night. The power went out over the entirety of Los Feliz and Eagle Rock -- a huge part of Los Angeles was without power! I wasn't at the screening (I actually was driving over the ridge and saw the basin dark as night), but Matt was there with the audience showing Dial Code: Santa Claus.

Everyone was a great sport about the power going out, and I heard lots of stories about it. Here are the brave souls who endured the darkness in the cinema club!

Unfortunately the power in the city did not come back on in time to start back up the movie. What happens during situations like this? Well, all of the viewers got a ticket stub that admits them to one free movie in the future -- so we hope to see them again soon.

Now, for this week's media.

First up on the calendar is The Rocking Horse Winner, which will be presented on DVD. The cover one hundred percent captures the most wild part of the movie ... and look at that rocking horse's teeth!

Our sold out show of the week is L.A. Confidential, which is being played on a (previously sealed!) VHS. Honestly I wasn't sure if Matt actually wanted me to unseal it, as it was factory sealed, but it was fun ripping off the plastic. I do that to all of my tapes immediately when I buy them.

Then for the double billing of the week -- we are showing Bachelor Mother and It's Love I'm After, which are both being shown on DVD.

I really like seeing them side by side. The boxes match and probably look great on the shelf.

And here's the lobby cards for Bachelor Mother ... I didn't lie about the color!

Remember, if you visit the Cinema Club, you'll be able to see these lobby cards (from Quentin's personal collection) on display! If you do take pictures, make sure to tag the club on Instagram.

Oh, and before I forget, here's the gift Matt gave me for Christmas. Thanks Matt!

I did end up putting one of my Train Killer tapes in the holder, but I immediately returned it back to his rightful spot in my collection. Yes, I have 3 slip covers, 1 tape with an incorrect cover, 1 clamshell, and 1 betamax version. What started as me mentioning I loved a movie turned into an inside joke turned into people gifting me as many versions as possible (lol!).

I found this variant in the Archives collection. I need to add this box art to my "The Train Killer" shrine! ;-)

Like I said, let me know if you liked getting this newsletter in the comments below. If you did, I'll continue doing them for the cinema club episodes! And if not, well ;-) I'll see you later!

xoxo gala

Yeah i always rip open my vhs’s when i get them too, but thats just to make sure the tape hasn’t become moldy. And yes, newsletters good!

The Warner Archive dvds can typically be found through Amazon’s website. Warner Archive used to distribute their own physical media copies, but a handful of years ago their physical stuff folded into Amazon. Just an fyi the dvds are burned dvds. The blu rays are pressed.

Ian Courtney

Where do you look for dvd copies of older movies like these?

Britt

I’m one of the people in the group photo at the vista cinema club when the power went down. I believe there was only the last 20 mins or so of Dial Code: Santa Claus left, and I’m bummed to have missed the last act. But, Matt was great and kept everyone entertained in the dark. And it was his birthday apparently too. Looking forward to my next visit and screening there. Thanks again for the weekly podcast giving us all a heads up of what to look out for and forward to seeing in the coming week at the cinema club

Gregg Simon

I enjoyed it!

Felice

A most nicely done newsletter.

Joseph T. Porter

Two thumbs up! Thanks!

The Actors Shelter

Awesome! I wish I lived in California! You all are doing God's work.

Jason Delgado

Haha, in today's market most of them are unsealed and sold second hand, sometimes you'll still find a sealed (or re-sealed tape) -- but Matt made me open the factory sealed tape on air - gala

“Our sold out show of the week is L.A. Confidential, which is being played on a (previously sealed!) VHS” aren’t all VHS’ technically previously sealed? 😅

Emil Gud

Oh yes. The entire movie. I’m going to return this week for an uninterrupted watch. Haha…During the outage, I became friends with my two neighbors. One, an actor from London. The other, a film composer from Alabama. Two people from opposite sides of the spectrum.

Michael DeStefano

Did they end up playing the rest of the movie, or did you end up catching it another time? Bet you made some great friends while waiting ;-)

Video Archives Podcast

Yes! A one-of-a-kind experience. We were about 90 minutes into the movie at the time of the outage, about 15 minutes before the 20-minute intermission. I decided to stay and sit in the dark for 30+ minutes with 400 strangers. When the Vista powered back up, it felt…magical 🎞️📽️🍿

Michael DeStefano

Yes I heard around 400 people were there to see it! I know the power turned back on when people were still in line to get their refund stub. Did they start back up the movie ? How far through it were you?

Video Archives Podcast

+1 for the newsletter 🍿 Nice VAC pic 👍🏼 During the blackout, I was next door for opening night of THE BRUTALIST. A lot of bonding with neighbors…new friends made.

No, I’m guessing it was a downed power line but I should check and see if they reported it. The power did come back on thankfully but by then everyone was heading home.
