Hey guys! What a wild and awesome week it has been. In case you missed it, Quentin & Roger went on The Joe Rogan Experience and talked about the video store, podcasting, the movie experience, and gratitude. I was so pumped when they went on the show and had such a hard time keeping it a secret, so I was excited when it came out.

One thing I did have loose lips on, however, was the movies for this week. Sorry guys, I accidentally did a Freudian slip in the description (which you guys caught) and spilled the beans on this week's movies ... but I don't think that changed anyone's enjoyment of watching and listening! Next week, I'll make sure to keep the movies a secret so you can figure out the clues all together :-)

First on the docket this week was The Thomas Crown Affair, which I really loved and the longer it sits with me the more powerful it gets. Quentin has a beautiful United Artists box from Video Archives -- tape number 739.

I love the touches on this box, especially the quotes around the title.

One thing I'm not sure got discussed was Lady Faye's crazy hair-dos ... what was going on here?!

Second movie we covered was The Big Sleep -- the 1978 version. Quentin has the better box out of the two of us (as usual). I love this painted poster!

The font for the spine is very of its era.

I like the stills the back of the box chose to highlight, we get a lot of the really good action moments -- and my man Oliver Reed! My dream would be to have us cover a Ken Russell movie with Oliver Reed in it ... but which one?

And lastly, the second (but not the last!) turgid tearjerker of the season. Ice Castles. I also love this box cover. Looking at them now, it's really hard to decide which box I like best.

It's also one of those classic RCA Columbia Pictures boxes, but man, the red white and black just looks so good here.

I'm curious about the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair and the remake for Ice Castles ... has anyone seen either?

That's all for this week! To my Aftershow listeners, I'll catch you next week with even more content on these three movies (and a few other extras). To everyone else, make sure to keep a look out for the clues to next episode's movies in the chat.

xoxo gala!

Loved the Joe Rogan pod appearance. That's how I found out about Video Archives. Re: merch... do you have any mouse pads? Would love to impress my work friends with a nerdy mouse pad. :-)

Same here!

Oliver Reed. REVOLVER. SITTING TARGET. THE HUNTING PARTY. LADY IN THE CAR WITH GLASSES AND A GUN (Where he beats up a man through a car window). The man is a UK legend for all his issues people may have with him in this day and age. I would suggest you watch some of his interviews on YouTube or TikTok etc as they are hilarious.

I’m already looking forward to the clues for the next 3 movies. This was a fun week. My girlfriend is a farm girl who grew up playing ringette, which was a variation of hockey that girls played in the 70s/80s. Her father (the farmer) didn’t want any of the girls to take up figure skating because it was “a waste of valuable ice-time”, so she always harbored that secret desire, and one weekend she and her friend took a trip into a neighboring town and put on the figure skates and the great outfits and made a day of it. She told me that story just before we watched Ice Castles together, and we both enjoyed it very much. Even though the movie was primarily filmed in Minnesota and Colorado it seemed very familiar to us both, me growing up in N. Alberta and she growing up in Saskatchewan. Thanks for turning us on to it. PS: normally I would have thrown this comment onto a postcard and sent it, but you know… freakin Canada Post strike. Nobody’s getting nothing through the mail right now.

Would love to see pics posted of the tapes themselves too. Love seeing the labels on the tapes and sometimes a pressing or what have u can have or seem to have diff labels. Or maybe the tape might have a cool be kind rewind sticker, etc. If ya could and can, that would be awesome. No worries if not though! Thanks!!

Hi, I'm new here. I found your podcast through the Joe Podcast. I've actually not heard of The Big Sleep, even though I'm a huge Oliver Reed fan. I look forward to listening tomorrow, on my day off. I should also add that I am still figuring out Patreon, I see the community is getting busy. I'm happy to float around, watch films, and catch up on all the chat that goes on.

Michelle O'Toole

I was equally surprised by this. I had no idea they were going to do this.

Greg

The Thomas Crown remake is really entertaining.

Ghost Wolf 🐺

Currently listening to the podcast now, about halfway through. So much great insight. Listening to Roger speak on jail time was profound and I loved how he was able to sneak writing past the guards. Growing up with a dad who was a guard It is interesting to hear what life was kinda like on the other side of the fence.

It was a great surprise seeing the Joe Rogan experience with qt and Roger pop up in my notifications, great podcast, need to catch up on the episodes

Orson Wellies

I’ve been wanting to see this movie. I’ve been getting into Steve McQueen films recently.

Corey Schjoth

The Crown remake is superb and superior!

Paul Rowlands

The Devils is no Altered Spaces but it’s pretty dank

Cream Jeans

I remember the TCA remake was straight up ass when I was a kid. Pierce Brosnan and Renee Russo has little to no chemistry. Bad casting imo

Hey Gala, I’d love to hear an episode featuring Ken Russell’s Women in Love. A lot of it was shot in my hometown so it has a special place in my heart.

Anil Rana

I actually didn’t mind the early alert as to what this week’s movies would be, as it was the very first time I was able to watch all three films before listening to the podcast. That was a very unique experience. I enjoyed that.

My mom worked at a video store in a small town when I grew up. She was a single mom so I had to walk to her video store after school each day. The RCA Cover is sending deep after school flashbacks for me.

Alex R Wagner

McTiernan’s last good movie! And it’s quite good, even at times sorta great. If only remakes and reimaginings could be of this caliber.

David Chien

Yes, more films with Ollie!

Kevin William

Hi, Gala! Firstly, I’d just like to say that these podcasts are helping me get through some dark times, so I’m eternally grateful for that. Secondly, I don’t think I’ve got through a single episode without your old man mentioning Ken Russell, so surely it’s about time you 3 get stuck into one of his films! It’s an obvious choice, but I’d love to hear your good self, Rog and QT dissect “Women In Love”. Also, on the subject of Oliver Reed, around 4 years ago I heard an interview with Quentin and he was talking about how he was in negotiations with Sony, regarding re-releasing “The Lady In a Car With Glasses and a Gun” on Blu Ray. I’m curious to know if anything came of that? Still haven’t seen it and would love to. Anyway, big love to you all. Brendan from England

Thanks for posting! Cheers!

Fuck yea

Fuck yea

I watched that one a lot as a kid. Anything Pierce was in after Bond I would go and check out.

Spencer Scott Holmes Old Man Orange

I love the box cover to The Thomas Crown Affair. Need a poster of that one.

I wouldn't call it garbage, everyone is free believe in whatever he wants in the way he wants in my opinion and yes IT IS a nutty and uncomfortable movie but it's a Ken Russell movie!

Thanasis Tryfonas

The Thomas Crown remake is really fun. Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo are terrific. I don't think it's as flamboyant as the original but it's probably a better movie.

John

It’s a very uncomfortable and nutty movie. It seems to me Ken Russell hated Catholicism and Christianity. Catholicism is a garbage religion. Real Christianity is only and always found in the book of Acts from the Holy Bible. 🫤😁

Brandon Lee

That be SO COOL !!! 🤞Hehehe...i know G, i own it on dvd because of that reason! 😉👍

Thanasis Tryfonas

I’ve actually been holding off on seeing The Devils because Q mentioned he wanted to do it on the show! So fingers crossed. It’s one of my last Ken Russell movies to watch - gala

The Devils please and thank you! Like Straw Dogs, I feel it’s worthy of a full episode discussion.

Tom Heal

Great stuff! Thanks, Gala!

Darren Franz

That's some really nice VHS artwork there! Thanks again Sweet Gala! 🙏😺 Would love to hear The Devils be discussed by our lovely gang!!! 👌💯
