Quentin + Roger on the Joe Rogan Experience

Comments

This is an awesome pod! Thanks for appearing on JRE's pod.

Liz

Life was so much better with video stores. Picking up your movies on Friday after shopping for groceries was an experience I haven't been able to replace.

Ben

Good thing it's FREE!

Vaughan Smith

So damn disappointing. Wtf, Roger?? Low hanging fruit.

Chad Byrnes

Couldn't agree with you more

Chad Byrnes

Joes a sweet guy and has one really great message,”We don’t haft to agree on everything to love each other” I think that message is a very important one.You got Quentin on one side of the spectrum and Joe on more the middle but they are friends no reason to hate Joe though.Everyone in life has a good reason to be where they are at.I loved the episode and especially getting to know Roger and his battles more(and conquering bad stuff)One of my favorite episodes on the JRE.

…Bob Pitt?

I found this interview so fun, memorable and moving. And also never a bad thing to see Fritz Lang get a shoutout.

Alex Villarreal

The Joe Rogan show is terrible. I don’t care about the political stuff, but I would be embarrassed to listen to this on the regular. This is the go to podcast for people who believe the earth is flat. Lots of strained mens go too podcast too. He called his little comedy kliq The Death Squad, which should be enough of a warning. I remember Norm Macdonald roasting that rightfully. He would just laugh at him. Sad the way culture has gone though that eventually he would probably have been forced to go on it to promote something. Rogan is the worst kind of bully. Acts nice but if he doesn’t like you then the bullying starts. No one can say anything because he’s trained himself as a fighter. Doubly so now that he’s very rich and powerful because of how popular his podcast is. I’m not a political person but it’s no surprise a person like this would align themselves with someone like Donald Trump. It’s the same kind of thing. Also, the Kubrick conspiracy talk is a major red flag at this point. I don’t think there is anything more boring than a Kubrick obsessive. It’s just god awful. It’s all just farts in the wind. I love Kubrick but his films hypnotise idiots. Certain brands have a chemistry that just hit and once people believe in it, you’ve got them for life.

J

Yeah, super embarrassing. Roger compares Jan 6 protests to the other protests that happened during the Trump administration. Does Roger think ‘stop the steal’ was of the same level as the BLM protests? Just mindless contrarianism.

Jesse Rimler

Quentin’s speech around the 40 minute mark, of his dissatisfied friend in his 30s is a quintessential lesson

Username648

Roger was damn good here

Chris Bumbray

Thank you for being so vulnerable and sharing your story, Roger. I genuinely found this to be a very valuable episode. Lots of good, insightful nuggets of wisdom from the both of you.

Andro

Tarantino mentioned going to Jack In The Box near Video Archives to get a coke in one of his stories just as I drove by a Jack In The Box while I was listening in my car.

David Rozycki

A man's got to know his limitations. Lame. Ciao

juan blondo

Just re-watched the 'Just Like You' story and it goes hard. Love it! How much does geography and access determine our lives? Raising my glass.

Evan McNeil

I hate JRE for his political views and his blatant disregard for Truth, BUT he's always been a great conversationalist and I loved hearing more about Roger's views on EYES WIDE SHUT (I'm going down to the New Bev this friday to watch it with his Interpretation in mind. )and especially about his personal lived experience in jail. My father was swnt to jail for a period of time(about a year)when i was young, and from time to time he'd tell me about what it was like but Roger's experience opened up an old wound I just now realized I never fully addressed so ill be patiently waiting for his book to drop!

Happy's Funhouse

That bit about his Jake Lang friend was false too :/ Jake's own attorneys have been delaying with the hopes it's forgotten about/Trump pardons him

Happy's Funhouse

It sucks too cuz a lot of the conspiracy guys double down when confronted with facts

Happy's Funhouse

Same 😃

Leigh Ann Karetas

How about a special episode of Roger telling us what he thinks was cut out of Eyes Wide Shut? I need more details. What was the missing narration telling the audience?

David Rozycki

Seemed like he did. 👍

Carl

We are trying to fix that at #flipsidefrolic podcast. 👍

Carl

Loved the episode - it brought me here. Quentin was spot on about Homeland and Yellowstone. I didn't last 6 episodes into the 1st season with YS. The first season of Homeland, like the first episode of Ozarks has the pacing and catharsis of a great film. (I cried leaving the theatre after 0UTiH, my wife looks at me 'What the f*#k is wrong with you?!" haha I broke it down for her later that night). I loved the inside baseball on 'Killing Zoe'. I watched my VHS copy a few months ago and it still holds up. Thanks for everything and I'm excited to be part of this forum.

Evan McNeil

Have always felt like this. I love hearing Tarantino talk. I love his passion and conviction, but sometimes his taste is wack. I really enjoyed his book Cinema Speculation, but I probably disagreed with his takes about half the time.

N.M. Janice.

But did Roger actually LIKE that cigar???

Bill MidnightVHS

cool story bro.

Rust Vendor

the fatal flaw is that there aren't 2 sides, there are infinite sides. Why is America obsessed with a binary? that's the main problem, there's only two teams.

Rust Vendor

it definitely was interesting and worth watching, better than a lot of stuff that came out this year. People have bad taste.

Rust Vendor

Paranoia is a major theme of EWS

Michael

and showgirls is awesome

Pete

Has Avary trashed deadwood? I was merely hypothetically saying I couldn’t stand to see QT trash Deadwood, Sopranos or Wire. Especially after seeing him praise legit crap like Yellowstone.

Stan the Man

Damn Avary trashing Deadwood. One the best shows ever made. Now that show wasn't soap. I remember every episode like it was a movie.

Mic p

Why does Tarantino strike me as the kid of guy who would be pissed off they never brought up the Russian again on The Sopranos. Dude has the worst taste sometimes. Fucking Yellowstone? Are you kidding me? Please no one ask him about Deadwood or The Wire. I can’t take what might come out of his mouth

Stan the Man

Seriously. What the hell…

Stan the Man

I pride myself on my BS detector and boy does it ping whenever Roger Avary speaks. Maybe it’s because I have a draft of Eyes Wide Shut(164 pages) shooting script but it ends EXACTLY the same way the movie does.

Stan the Man

have u seen Mr. Inbetween? reminds me of QT filmed in AUS

Aaron Grimshaw

What an incredible passionate and eye opening conversation.

Jamison Forkenbrock

Avary hearing you fall in line with that bullshit conspiracy crap Rogan spewed about Jan 6th hurt me to hear.

Mic p

Oh, I'm happy Joe touched on The Joker 2 and both QT and RA liked it...I thought I was the only one who saw some good in it. I went to see it twice... The fact, that J2 was music based worked for me..For lots of us, of a certain vintage, music was very important. and we all had our own inner soundtracks and it helped define us in some ways. When you are young and poor, music is one of the few art forms that transports people. Helps them escape their surroundings for 3 minutes Its no surprise it would help Arthur. In the film, you get to know Auther through song.- his hope and his hopelessness are all there in the songs JP gave a brilliant performance, as good as the first movie..Even Gaga was good. Is it a perfect film? NO, Is it a brilliant film? NO but it is interesting , it has ideas and some great moments and that is enough ,

British Way

One can only dream QT will do TV. I think The Critic sounded like a good mini-series. QTs fingerprints are all over the modern telly greats .. The Sopranos and Breaking Bad ... It would be great to see him rise to the challenge. Maybe QT and RA should do a telly show for net flicks or ... better yet , launch their own tv channel

British Way

I tend to think (unlike Rogan's usual crowd) QT and RA are artists, artists are not led by mundane partisan politics.

British Way

QT and Roger should tour the podcast now and then - 3 times a year. Show some films at one of QTs cinemas do a QA , and Merge the podcast into an event.

British Way

I retract my statement on the absence of fun. (Also, it took me a hot second to realize you aren’t an Indian man. 😆 I always spell it “Rog.”)

David Chien

I eat cheese still!

Raj

Thank you!

Raj

Thank you!

Raj

She’s just such a REALLY GOOD plant-based chef!

Raj

Thank you!

Raj

A while back on another podcast Quentin teased us that he had a serialized drama/miniseries. I’m guessing he was just teasing because Apple/Netflix/Max would be insane to not immediately send him a case of gold bouillon for such a project.

Kel

Sometimes I swear we live in a simulation. No one ever talks about the show Homeland. I recently decided to do a rewatch and last night I watched the suicide vest episode. Today I listen to the Podcast and what does Quentin bring up out of the blue, that exact episode.

David Sapp

It was interesting to hear QT and Avary talking about modern TV on Joe Rogan, I have wondered if QT has considered making a TV series, perhaps continuing Jewels "Kung Fu" like journey post Pulp Fiction, I would love to see the adventures he gets into

Aaron Grimshaw

I guess you must not be a fan of Rob Ager ;) personally, I think Eyes Wide Shut is a movie meant to drive you crazy and get you into all sorts of theories. There isn't just one explanation.

Julien Amara

I have to disagree. The 1st time was one of the only interview I can think of where Quentin talked really in depth about stand up comedy. I remember conversations about Sam Kinison and Andrew Dice Clay, that was fun and interesting.

Julien Amara

This was a much better appearance by QT on JR show , than last time. He seemed not to vibe, This was fun

British Way

1941… first time I jacked-off

Dee

That was a lot of fun listening to them. I love hearing about stories from their video store days.

Corey Schjoth

Watching the Rogan podcast convinced me to head over here and sign up.

Wayne Hodges

Rogan is a meathead.

Michael

When Roger says he’s a student of Kubrick, he means Vivian. https://x.com/ViKu1111

Michael

In a hindsight, a show hosted by luddites fetishizing obsolete technology was bound to come up against common sense eventually.

Michael

Why would Kubrick embed a secret narrative about a pedophile sex cult in a film that is explicitly about a sex cult? There is no conspiracy. Everything is happening in plain sight. Ziegler is shamelessly schtupping a woman he drugged in his bathroom during an Xmas party, hosted by his wife. Milich is prostituting his daughter. There’s no decoder ring necessary. Next Roger will be telling us that The Shining is about Kubrick faking the moon landing.

Michael

There is no evidence that Jan 6th was instigated by Antifa or the FBI. The majority of Americans agree the rioters belong in jail.

Michael

After all the noise about VA going behind a paywall, it was great to hear the guy's views on it. I am proud to be a member of the Video Archives club from the beginning and being part of these great movie conversations and discoveries!

John Connell

Yeah, man. All the best.

Paul Rowlands

Over 60 titles! The films mentioned, discussed and referenced in the episode! https://boxd.it/B8NOY

Paul Rowlands

What is this shit?

Randy Gelling

They should do a VA episode of Myra Breckinridge

Harley MacGray

Love QT, love Joe, love Roger. Great episode! :)

A sweet boy

Gala: I couldn’t track this one down… Q: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, that’s right bitch!! 🤣

David Chien

I don't see it as an endorsement as much as a large platform they could get on and speak about. But I get it.

Teriq Mason

I am Stevo

Dee

The stuff about Eyes Wide Shut is balderdash. Kubrick finished the movie. It follows the novella closely. I can’t imagine it with narration. SK’s style is to remove as much as possible so the viewer fills in the rest. The film is crammed with visual red herrings. The pedophile sex cult theory has been floating around for decades and it’s nonsense. Kubrick’s films are deliberately ambiguous. Everything in The Shining can be attributed to Jack Torrance going insane, except one thing. How does he get out of the pantry? It’s a movie it’s not real life.

Michael

The Eyes Wide Shut analysis suggests a tinfoil hat

Michael

Love the comment about people or being able to debate, Roger. #flipsidefeolic is our podcast that helps people debate both sides of issues to get a better perspective of where others are coming from. @flipsidefrolic Flipsode Frolic Podcast 👍 Come on when you are in CHICAGO! ✌️

Carl

The old saying “Don’t meet your heroes.” Has some wisdom to it and it’s probably a good thing I’ll never get to talk to QT and Roger. When Roger talked about being vegetarian and QT said “Because his wife made him.” I wanted to shout “Oh so Roger is the Jules Winfield of the two!” Which I think would make both groan because it just reveals how much Pulp Fiction is seeped in my brain. 😂 All I have to say is, “Yeah, but bacon tastes good. Pork chops taste good.”

Kel

This was such a good episode! As someone who’s a big fan of Showgirls, I loved hearing QT and RAs opinions haha

Chelsea

lol, you will hear him do that a few times to me this season (unfortunately) 😹 - gala

Video Archives Podcast

I could listen to these two talk about movies forever! An extra 3 hours of them this week was a gift! Roger’s story at the end had me in tears!

Britt

Joe is a chud, but not to worry-Roger/QT do 95% of the talking...and QT has a nice little rant about misinformation about two hours and 20 minutes in.

Johnny Blade

Sad for you. Do some research.

King Dinosaur

Tarantino laughing maniacally because people can’t find or watch the movie he selected was great. 😂

Brandon Lee

Yeah I think the BS he's been on during and right after the election, coming off like a Russian puppet, makes me wanna skip this one. I tried to give it a listen, but Rogan is becoming a lot of what I don't like in someone today. A person who is grossly misinformed and for some reason, likes to spread that misinformation to everyone, hurting society as a whole.

Teriq Mason

Literally just finished this. Incredible episode. Roger, more power to you! Thanks for being so transparent and I am looking forward to your book.

Paul Anthony Stakelin

I'm right there with you. I get they mainly talk about movies, but JRE is a tool and I don't wanna hear him speak right now. And I use to be a fan of JRE.

Teriq Mason

Movie executive turned director … Was Quentin talking about Joe Roth?

Paul Rowlands

Roger’s breakdown of the ending to Eyes Wide Shut blew my mind.

Josh Boone

We are so glad your daughter is ok!!!!

Video Archives Podcast

Great pod! New patron here after tuning in for this JRE. I've probably seen about 50% as much 70s and 80s exploitation as QT and Avary :). Can't wait to dig into the video archives back catalog. The J6 discussion was surprising. Yes, I agree with Roger that 1000-day detention without trial is despicable no matter where you stand politically. Roger's heartfelt monologue at the end about the car crash really shook me. My 2-year old daughter had a near-death accident yesterday. A 60-pound mirror fell and shattered on top of her. I sat in the ER while she slept late last night listening to this episode. Fortunately she only sustained one notable (small) cut and possibly a minor concussion. Roger, what you said combined with my experience yesterday is really making me re-evaluate my values. Thank you.

entex

When Roger starts to talk with Joe about J6 I got heated… why is Quentin so quiet? I was ready to spend the next two hours making a video about how he’s woke and taking him down for his Kamala opinions. But then he spoke up, drastically switched the topic and I realized as a filmmaker right then and there that pop culture is here to capture and distract you. If I want to dedicate my life to movies, I have to leave this nonsense behind. Thank you for the save Q. I’ll never forget the moment at 33 years old that you so beautifully taught me I was just getting in my own way as a director. Movies only, movies forever. Movies is LIFE 🇺🇸🔥😝

Alex R Wagner

I think the last 15 minutes in particular were powerful and moving in these times. Everyone should listen and reflect this holiday season. Love and respect to Roger for his candor and wisdom and to QT for ceding the time to his friend. (And the movie discussion was super too.)

Chris Fisanick

Russell, buddy, relax.

OnlineFor3ver

This is like my 3rd episode of Rogan ever, had to run over here and join! Do you think TVA will ever be filmed as well or just audio?

Jon Rutten

he said it was the perfect way to end the show, you could tell he was touched imo

Jon Rutten

Thank you for the tip. I found it online; awesome!

Jamie Phillippe

Replying with a snarky comment evades the question. Why would Quentin and Roger go on a show notorious for spreading misinformation. As Marshall McLuhan said, “the medium is the message.”

John Imperio

I signed up for this patreon because of this episode. I’m so happy to be here this is awesome! Thanks guys

Diego Payan

When someone goes on Rogan I don't think they're supporting him, he's supporting them! It has over 14 million listeners on Spotify plus millions on Youtube. Quentin and Roger could be on every major TV talkshow for a week and not reach as many people. This one appearance probably guarantees the podcast will have the audience it needs to go on to season 3, which is what fans want isn't it?

Damion Matthews

Jena Stone

January 6th is also the day film legend Peter Bogdanovich died (in 2022) and when Nancy Kerrigan’s leg was beat to shit (in 1994 - I learned this from I, Tonya). I think it’s amazing that Orson Welles once lived with Peter and Peter once lived with Quentin. Talk about Kings of their respective eras!

The Lake Show

For all the fun this episode was, the highlight was Roger bravely sharing the horrifying experience he suffered through in his past. Hearing him discuss his experience and his perspective on life was deeply profound and moving. It injected me with a huge dose of gratitude for all those simple things I have!

John Larkin

hearing that Avery goes all in on Jan 6 conspiracy stuff is enough to know that I made the right choice avoiding this JRE gimmick. It's incredibly disappointing to here. Frankly it will cloud future listening of the VA podcast. Thank you for posting.

Russell Grant

Nope

Draymond 'Buppy' Washington

I'm just finishing listening to the episode right now, but two movies they mention on this podcast will be future movies we cover! ;-)

Video Archives Podcast

So is The Andersonville Trial (1970) going to be a VA episode?

Paul Rowlands

Am I the only MAGA Quentin / Roger fan?

Jason Seislove

He was wearing this when I saw him at The New Beverly the other night to watch THE SPOILERS.

Jason Seislove

It's just you.

Jason Seislove

Also Roger doesn’t do anything fun.

David Chien

Absolutely. By the way, I just saw a Mazda commercial with Chris Mulkey and it's impossible not to see him as Jack DeVries. He even does that little Jack DeVries smirk as he drives the Mazda, just like it's a Porsche with "On Your Feet" blaring!

Jason Seislove

I joined Patreon because the JRE was so good. Bravo

Jack Graham

They haven't.

Jason Seislove

I enjoyed your JRE podcast episode—it flew by so quickly! Your genuine authenticity was incredibly refreshing.

Keeley Turner

A takeaway from this JRE episode: Quentin is about the sausage, whereas Roger is about how the sausage is made.

David Chien

Cocaine and a hand grenade.

Danny Medici

I somehow missed that you guys were now on Patreon until seeing today's JRE, easiest sub I've ever signed up for on here, you guys are absolute legends and it's a pleasure to support

Alex Pelletier

Quentin was wearing that jacket when I saw him at the New Bev with Roger and Gala -- no, I didn't bother them. I didn't want to mess up their movie-going experience. But it was awesome to see them! I still have an autograph that Quentin gave me when I was 12!

Jason Seislove

Loved watching you guys on JRE! I hope to see more guest appearances in the future!

sleepwizard

Antifa and the FBI DID play a large part in the Capitol attack. That's public knowledge. Roger is correct.

Jason Seislove

Avary's discussion of "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999) is interesting for the way he rather exaggerates the aspect of the two men who appear in the background of the last scene. He says those two old guys "are throughout the movie... are constantly in the background of the film". They only appear twice. First, they're guests at the party scene, and secondly at the end. It's the ending which has gotten much attention. "You see those two guys walking off with the daughter. They're taking her away. They [Kidman and Cruise] have given their daughter to the pedo cult. That's what's happened at the end of the movie." Except when you look closely, there's no evidence the two men even see the girl (actually, there are three men -- two old men plus a young man who had previously played a waiter). They don't take her away. She walks towards them, and she continues walking in their direction as the movie cuts away. If they were kidnapping her, they did so with telepathy! In a brilliant analysis of the film (link below), Nik Dobrinsky offers another view, suggesting the men are guardian angels. They're there to look after the girl. I actually do think Kubrick wants us to think she goes with them, but leaves it vague and open to interpretation. Which brings me back to Roger... earlier in the podcast he and Rogan engage in a ridiculous conspiracy chat, claiming Antifa and the FBI are responsible for the January 6th invasion of the US Capitol. Tarantino prudently remains silent during both conversations (uncharacteristically, he sits by while Roger does most of the talking in the whole episode.) Conspiracy ideas come about from people trying to make sense of the unsettling, the uncomfortable, the unknown -- but they interpret things with a cynical and sinister world view. They're not interested in sensible explanations. They want explanations that point out the more negative aspects of the world. It can make for great art, but terrible political analysis. My conclusion from all this -- Roger Avary's next film should be a cynical horror story conspiracy thriller! His own Seventh Victim, Rosemary's Baby, Devil's Advocate is just bursting to be made. https://boydrinksink.com/eyes-wide-shut-hidden-in-plain-sight

grow up

AllMissSunday

If having an open-ended 3-hour+ friendly conversation is "jumping the shark" then yeah.

Jeremy Mullins

I was hoping this community would be a refuge from the like of JRE. Disappointing to see QT and RA breath further life into such platforms.

Hans

Love they talked about the great Killing Zoe!

Paul Rowlands

Yes, from 2016 til 2020... all I know is that he went from making fun of trump in 2016 to by the start of the pandemic he was turning into a trump cheerleader. Not a fan of antifa but falsely claiming they started a forest fire followed by vaccine misinformation to just too much to ignore. Can no longer accept him for beyond anything other than what he has proven of himself, a hypercrit.

Airsick Grove

What a fantastic conversation. Wasn't aware that Roger had been in jail. Kudos to him for fighting his way back!

Chris Herchmer

have you ever given him a chance?

Jordan Blackburn

WTF, Rogan is the personification of misrepresentation. I won't check out on my favorite podcast however I'm not watching / listening to this f••• all neanderthal.

Airsick Grove

Amazing! Thank god for JRE

Elliot Baker

On the topic of 80s cocaine films, The Hidden (1987) is the best.

Jamie Phillippe

The JRE episode brought me here - never truly thought to actually come to patreon but you guys sold me on it!

Jarkko Mattinen

Great Job Guys !!

Ghost Wolf 🐺

My mind went to Slim Pickens in Rancho Deluxe

Max

Saw the JRE and came over to support you

Mean Mike

QT was pretty clear on his general baseline Democrat politics on the Bill Maher podcast.

Kevin LC

Nah They’re still Rock n Roll

Ghost Wolf 🐺

Love VA, not a fan of Joe Rogan and his history of misinformation, both politically and medically. Hope this doesn't happen again.

Fergus Burke

Is it me or did Quentin and Roger just “jump the shark”? 🤷‍♀️😩

John Imperio

Saw the words Tarantino and Avery and clicked.

Soulnrnb Grizz

Frankly, I can't stand Joe Rogan or Bill Maher but I can tolerate their shows when Quentin is on. Having Roger there with him is going to make this extra special!

Kevin William

QT & RA meets JR = ¡Boom! Thank you, guys. Greetins from Córdoba, Argentina.

miguel peirotti

QT has been pro Kamala and Roger definitely does not have a red hat in his closet..

The Buffmaster

I really like QT’s Jacket. I’m a gamer so it makes me think of Leon Kennedy in Resident Evil 4.

Kel

You’re free to do so. I support QT and Roger talking about film because it enhances my enjoyment of the medium. Politics be damned.

Kel

Nice 😎

Brandon Lee

I wouldn’t be too sure.

Michael

ugh, boo

mm

Excited for this!!!

Meghann Salus

Hell yes I loved QT’s first appearance on JRE.

Kel

Going on Rogan will definitely bring more attention to the podcast. I'll be watching for sure!

Kevin William

Wow! That's rad! 😎🤘 Thank you!!! 🙏💯

Thanasis Tryfonas

I really don't like that they're on that weirdo's show.

Teriq Mason

Embarrassing to see. Might cancel my membership if this is the kind of content they want to support.

Russell Grant

Yeah I'll maybe watch 2 JRE a year and here's one!

Sexy Ghoulies

I suspect they don't share his politics, but I'll definitely listen

The Buffmaster

I don't watch the JRE but I'll definitely check out this episode! Thanks
