There’s a parody of the Bulldog Drummond series called Bullshot Crummond. Might be fun to do a double feature with an original movie. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085279/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk

Ian Martin

Maybe I’m such a John Howard fan I’m too biased, but I think Kittridge is a okay guy. In every argument he has in the movie, I’m on his side.

Q.T.

Also gonna check out the Rex Beach novel. With those 5 film adaptations but the last one being in 1955, I wonder what an adaptation today would look like.

Mike Breiburg

Saw the 10:30 screening of The Spoilers last night at the Bev. It was really something knowing how rare that print is. I only hope that it will be mastered and scanned to a digital format soon so it can be available on home video and/or TCM soon.

Mike Breiburg

What does Quentin think of the Last Remake of Beau Geste (which wasn't technically the last remake, there was a BBC/A and E remake miniseries in the 80s)? Because obvs it's a parody, but my grandad appears as the coachman at the orphanage.

George White

The 1930 one!

Jason Seislove

Which one? 😉 there’s so many to choose from!

Got my tickets to THE SPOILERS! Can't wait!

Jason Seislove

Enjoyed the episode! Hope we can get to hear some feedback on “The Spoilers” after the showings. Did the fight scene live up to the legend? Such a great story about this movie.

Bill

I really want to see Fever Pitch after hearing Quentin rave about it!

David Rozycki

I was thinking the same thing! Feels like a plot straight out of The Maltese Falcon—a rare treasure teetering on the brink of oblivion. Digitizing these gems for everyone? Now that’s a reel-worthy idea!

Daniel Borg

Extra! Extra! Gala on the beat, Matt managing the magic, and Quentin bringing the razzle-dazzle! Salute to the Library of Congress for keeping The Spoilers spoiler-free—I bet that fistfight packs more blood than Tyson vs. Paul. Bulldog Drummond and Beau Geste? Headline week at the Cinema Club! Long live the flickering lights!

Daniel Borg

The performances of "The Spoilers" will certainly be a sensation. Incidentally, in John Douglas Eames' book about the Paramount films it says that William Boyd from The Spoilers is not the same-named actor from Hopalong Cassidy. we'll see...I wish I could be there. I wish all lucky viewers a lot of fun and an unforgettable, beautiful experience!!!

Michael Mohrdiek

Just gotta say: I like most of Richard Brooks' films 😁 After hearing QT's rant on Fever Pitch, I must check it out

Average Fella

Quentin said Ta Ta for now. 😂

Brandon Lee

Isn't it rather dangerous for there to be only one copy of this film on the planet? Seems like, I dunno, they might want to make some copies. And is there any particular reason the Library of Congress can't digitize all of their rare films for everyone to access?

Damion Matthews

Wow what an episode! Shout out to the Library of Congress! Regarding Fever Pitch - were Quentin and Roger ever big gamblers? (casino wise not indie film gambling) Would love to hear stories about any Vegas trips they took pre True Romance era. If they did go to Vegas together and are willing to talk about it, let’s make sure Gala sits that one out so we can get the good stuff!

The Lake Show

Ahhh! Thank you! I will definitely check it out! 👍🏻😎

Bulldog Drummong Strikes back is on YouTube: https://youtu.be/KbkyHJCw0sQ?si=anMbsqXvEMW3qL-z

Chris Bumbray

The silent version of Beau Geste has a sequel, Beau Sabreur (1928), from the novel by P. C. Wren. Unfortunately, at present, it’s a lost film, although the trailer exists. Also, Ronald Colman’s second outing as Drummond, Bulldog Drummond Strikes Back (1934) appears to be missing too.

Joseph T. Porter

This is all speculation, but I think I have a good guess why the 1930 version of THE SPOILERS has been so difficult to see: Many film people likely know that back in the 30s and 40s, if a movie by one studio got remade by another studio, part of the process was buying that movie outright from the first. BROADWAY BILL had been a Columbia picture, but when Paramount did their music version RIDING HIGH, they got the original. And while Paramount made the 1931 DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, MGM took over the rights when they made their 1941 rendition. The goal was twofold - one, to get all remaining IP rights that may still be at the first studio, and two, to bury the older movie so that it couldn't compete with it later. After all, "who wants to see that old stuff when our version is so much better." In the case of THE SPOILERS, the 1930 version was made by Paramount, and the 1942 version by Universal. But looking closely at the credits, the 1942 version is credited to Frank Lloyd Productions. So in all likelihood, *Frank Lloyd* bought the earlier movie off of Paramount, not Universal, but once he had the property, he assigned his IP rights to the book to them when he set up the movie there. Consequently, Uni did the next remake as well in 1955. So why doesn't Uni have the 1930 movie, even though they both have the rights to the book and the pre-'48 Paramount talkies? Remember, as Q said, he was told they didn't get that movie in that haul. Ergo, Lloyd himself must have kept it, again, to keep it out of competition with his remake. And his family likely forgot about it over the decades. And the reason why no one has come for it since? Well, provided you could get the Lloyd family to find their paperwork, and pay them the price they wanted for it, now, you still have to go back to the Beach estate and pay them renewal rights to the source book, because those never got renewed once Lloyd got it, because he never wanted it seen again. That's a LOT of money to spend for a forgotten 1930 movie. So, getting the 1930 SPOILERS back in circulation is not impossible, just very unlikely. Go to this screening!

QT's story about meeting Kathy Hicks at Allen's party is sweet. It shows his admiration for the underseen and underrated actors of Hollywood

Adriano

Same on THE WALL and “the Floyd.” Having said that, you could’ve knocked me over with a feather to learn that QT hasn’t seen it and clearly has no plans to do so any time soon. 🪶

Kevin

Ever shown BULLSHOT at any of the theaters? That was how my dad introduced me to the Bulldog Drummond character, in his roundabout way. A fun little retro relic for its time. TEXAS RANGERS RIDE AGAIN sounds like it would pair well with RANCHO DELUXE. Finally, I'm glad I'm not the only person who is fairly bored with Pink Floyd. I like 3 or 4 songs, but beyond that...nah, I'm good. Thanks for the extended "director's cut" version. Great way to start my week.

Mark Ibarra

Great episode. Wish I was there, but can’t wait to watch some of these at my house.

Phillip Duke II

To be clear, it's Pat Quinn, an American actress, who stars in ALICE'S RESTAURANT, not Patricia Quinn aka Lady Stephens, the British actress from THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW.

Marc Heuck

Hey Kev. If you search Fever Pitch, 1985, theres a copy on the internet archive.

James

I spoke too soon. There’s a copy on the internet archive.

James

There’s nowhere to see Fever Pitch unfortunately. I’ve looked for months. Would have to buy the VHS and get a digital copy made. 😭

James

Great episode! I mainly know John Howard from ‘A Philadelphia Story’ so of course I think of him as a jerk. Can’t wait to dig into some more of his movies that were mentioned! Also super excited for Fever Pitch! Almost done downloading!

Craig McMurtry

Great to hear the context around Quentin's fascination with George Bruce! I was curious enough to buy one of his air novels and it's fantastic. Can't wait to explore his work as a screenwriter.

Conor C

I first heard of “fever pitch” about twenty years ago when my aunt gave me a book about the razzie’s awards. After reading the review in the razzie book I rented it from my local video store “bay wear video” in Staten Island. (Also the same video store that the Wu-tang clan went to go to rent their favorite movies.) when baywear went out of business they sold their inventory and I bought the only copy of fever pitch they had for five dollars (key video, of course).

John Imperio

Damn, gotta go find me some FEVER PITCH.

Kevin

It’s funny how anytime QT is on a podcast it’s guaranteed to be an extra extended version. His passion for movies is palpable. I definitely feel like I’m getting my money’s worth. 🎥 I love it.

Brandon Lee

gotta rewatch fever pitch (lol @ q's description of wtf tone). could that film be to brooks what all that jazz was to fosse? and see beau geste

Pete

In the future if the guest is QT and that causes the episode to be a little late, I for one will not be mad!

Aaron Lee

Thank you to Mr. Tarantino as well of course! That's a real treat! 🎧💎👌✌️

Thanasis Tryfonas

Wow! That was a hell of a surprise!!! 😁👍💯 Thank you, thank you, thank you VAP 🙏♥️

Thanasis Tryfonas

Hey all, sorry this episode was a little late for patrons! We had a special guest this week and it turned into a mammoth of an episode with tons of treasure held within ;-)
