202 - The Love Bug / The Amsterdam Kill / Birds of Prey

Quentin & Roger join the race in The Love Bug.  A down on his luck race car driver purchases a little VW Bug that leads him straight to victory, but he's the only one who doesn't realize that the little car has a mind of its own!  In our first ever Disney clamshell title, Roger and Quentin discuss how Herbie honked his way into their hearts, how the Disney regular actors shined in their roles, and the story behind this particular box at Video Archives...

Now, Quentin and Roger continue the conversation with two more titles. Next up, it's The Amsterdam Kill, where a former DEA agent is hired by a drug lord who wants out of the business.  Quentin and Roger chat about how this movie was a precursor to heroic bloodshed, the dynamic between actors, and a bit about director Robert Clouse.  To finish up our triple feature, we've got Birds of Prey.  The guys focus in on the stunt work and how the actors play off each other.  Run fast and don’t look back, because Birds of Prey may be the last thing your eyes will ever see.

Its insane that The Love Bug grosssed 51 million in 1969 2nd to only Butch Cassidy. That is the equivalent of 500 million in todays dollars.

"A helicopter full of Val Kilmers from Heat" 🤗🤗🤗

Just jumping on now to season 2 and playing catch up glad to see the pod back! Did yall choose the Love Bug after The “Human” Factor because George Kennedy drove a VW beetle and then immediately gets hit with a shovel? 😂

Tony Pence

ThevAmsterdam Kill is on Tubi. I watched it this week.

Matt Porth

Be kind rewind !

Sonny

BANANAS is my my 43 year old nephews fave. He used to walk around the house saying "Occio"!

Louis Letizia

Great episode. I have the Columbia vhs of The Amsterdam Kill. Great quality. Your listeners can watch tis absolutely free on Tubi. Great print. Thanks for putting the spotlight on it. In New York it opened 2 weeks after The Big Sleep as an alone feature. This 14 year old loved both!

Louis Letizia

i live in australia, and have been unable to find amsterdam kill, what a tragedy :(

Jacob Dillon

The upload of Birds of Prey on YouTube does not have the original score which ran into copyright issues according to a commenter. So I wonder if The Video Archives crew watched versions with rhe original score? This commenter says the original score made the movie even better.

David Rozycki

I watched Amsterdam Kill on Amazon Prime with 7 day free trial of some channel. I forget which. Shout TV? Then if you cancel it before the 7 days are up it's totally free.

David Rozycki

It’s not a motorcycle baby it’s a chopper.

Adam Buckingham Rea

Just watched Fast Company. That would pair nicely with the Love Bug and I’d throw in American Nitro as the third film on the bill.

Jonny Blaze

Amsterdam Kill is on shout factory tv subscription on Prime. And it's a great print! About 10 minutes in and it's a blast.

Clay McMullen

Thank You 🙏

Ghost Wolf 🐺

Thanks for the Episode Gang !! My Damn Grandaughter now loves Herbie the Love Bug 😊

Ghost Wolf 🐺

Quentin (per usual) is right about BOP surpassing Blue Thunder in terms of flying stunts; the modifications to the Aerospatiale Gazelle they turned into Blue Thunder made it a nose-heavy tank barely capable of any maneuvers at all (exciting stuff was done with scale R/C, of course). But Blue Thunder remains the sentimental favorite for me (Scheider? Oates? MacDowell? Blue Thunder itself? Come on!)

THE LOVE BUG (1968) is the better movie but HERBIE GOES BANANAS (1980) is my HERBIE movie. I watch it every year on June 5th. Long story… and I love how Charles Martin Smith is in it as well as Harvey Korman and Fritz Feld. HERBIE made it to the 1980s.

Jeffrey Hemphill

Of course it was another great episode. I usually listen to the show first and then watch the movies. Great to imagine the movie in my head and then see it. Glad your back and way worth the money. Love this community.

Phillip Duke II

At one point, Dean Jones says ‘Let’s go to work!’

Paul Rowlands

The Love Bug discussion was fantastic! That live action era of Disney was so specific. My favorite was The North Avenue Irregulars…still hilarious

NightFeverCBJ

Death proof directed by a really cool guy!

bobby7

Okay so tell me I’m not crazy for thinking Thorndyke could be like the straight older brother of Swann from Phantom of the Paradise.

Paul Sherman

I’m forever terrified that the Bruce Campbell-led Herbie tv movie won’t hold up from my childhood memory haha

Louis Matta

10000000% joking about any vape reference! Hahaha! The Archies is cool though!

Don Lewis

Thank you! I’m on it!

I always thought it would be cool if someone made a movie about the French online service Mintel. It was the world's first and most successful mass-market online service prior to the World Wide Web. Have you ever seen the documentary about the history of computing called “the machine that changed the world.” As I recall they showed a clip from the 1957 film “desk set” starring Spencer Tracy. Thanks again for the French movie recommendation.

John Imperio

Another fantastic episode! Can’t wait for the next one. Will the next Aftershow require any homework?

Jonny Blaze

I'll admit that I haven't seen this one; it looks like a ball!

Andrew Hageman

Gala's left eye will start tweaking if we come to be known as vapers who talk about vaping, lol. How about Archivists? I saw someone suggest the awards be The Archies, and I think that's right on!

Raj

Corvette Summer.

Raj

The Chinese Typewriter being about a Chinese typewriter would be a movie I'd pay to see! Sounds intriguing! I loved the French film Populaire -- which is about the French typewriter company.

Raj

Those damn rotten apples spoiling the bunch, and my hiking joy

mm

Awesome one!

Andrew Hageman

The Love Bug The Car Speed Racer

Mark Ibarra

Love that you pull "Rear Window" into the mix on "Birds of Prey" since Jeff and Doyle do have that same rapport of war-plane comrades. Surprisingly, "BoP" puts it to way more narrative use than "RW." Also, the b/w stock footage of the Flying Tigers in "BoP" felt at first like it was gonna be flashbacks of PTSD--the content of the footage and the way it was intercut--and maybe there is a little of the PTSD element there but mixed with the nostalgia of having meaningful work during those flying days. As a character study, "BoP" opens a huge space to wonder about what's going down with Harry Walker.

Andrew Hageman

(Henry Selick nods furiously)

Buchinsky Brand

“Be Kind Rewind!” Was the sign off in season one if I’m not mistaken

Ben Stebelton

vanishing point/dirty mary crazy larry

Pete

Love that combo!!

Andrew Hageman

I believe that Michele Lee’s legs double for Anne Bancroft’s in the film poster for The Graduate.

Ken

I’d go with Cannonball Run (another childhood favourite) and Death Race 2000

Jonny Blaze

On the subject of tv movies I was reading this book about the history of the Chinese typewriter and the author mentioned this Tom Selleck tv movie from the late 1970s called “the Chinese typewriter “ unfortunately the movie has nothing to do with a Chinese typewriter. I guess it was just a cool sounding name for a tv movie.

John Imperio

That's the film I'm talking about. Lee Chan was Keye Luke's character.

George White

If you’d told me teenage me that in 2024 I’d be frothing at the mouth in excitement to go and watch The Love Bug I would have laughed in your face but here we are 😂

Paul Sherman

ReWatching "The Love Bug" got me thinking of triple feature options. I'm gonna run one with John Carpenter's "Christing" > "The Love Bug" > and round it out with David Cronenberg's "Crash." What auto triple feature would YOU create with "The Love Bug" as one of the trio??

Andrew Hageman

Here’s a lobby card that shows the ‘legs’ gag mentioned in the Love Bug section: https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/A1boWQWhxoL._AC_SL1500_.jpg

Buchinsky Brand

Hey guys (and Gala and fellow VAPers? VAPERS?), excited to have joined the Patreon even if Apple is trying to screw creators out of money here....problem for another day. I'm excited to listen to this but just want to say I was so obsessed with Herbie the Love Bug when I was a kid, I memorized his license plate and still remember it: OFP 857! Thank you for a space to share my completely niche and useless knowledge!

Don Lewis

It's on Shout TV, too, so you can watch it without commercials if you are interested.

Matthew McLean

Geoff Johns has some splaining to do

Gonzojoey

A while back you were talking about POTA tv series but you couldn’t recall the ongoing overall plot. They salvaged a disc from their crashed spaceship and were searching for “ancient “ technology to retrieve the info in hopes to get back to 70s(to prevent Disco from happening)

Gonzojoey

Birds of Prey on YouTube. https://youtu.be/BrOr4QSBCcI?si=lrA3uRrYuV9QTIoF

Paul Anthony Stakelin

Look at the cover of Doomsday Clock # 10. I mean c’mon, it’s not even subtle. It’s the “Comanche Uprising” poster

Gonzojoey

"Heroin...it's what's for dinner."

Mark Ibarra

The Love Bug was a childhood favourite. Herbie Rides Again is even better as I recall.

Paul Richardson

The Amsterdam Kill is on Tubi. https://link.tubi.tv/8sPDdWD8sOb

Paul Anthony Stakelin

Stevenson was a very capable director, who might be slightly better remembered had Walt Disney's name not been in large letters above the titles of Stevenson's most successful movies.

Mark Ibarra

Yes

Anthony Cap

Darby O’Gill and the Little People was also a fave of mine

Jo-Zee

So next week is a Video Vault episode on American Commandos?

Paul Rowlands

Is it Birds Of Prey from 1973?

Noah Vasseur

I know IMDb.com is not the most reliable source but according to it keye Luke was in Mr. Motto’s Gamble. But he wasn’t the lead. (What think is funny is keye Luke was in gremlins 2. The reason for that being funny is that I had a professor in college who compared pulp fiction to gremlins 2. She said, “pulp fiction is like gremlins 2 because it is just a bunch of cultural references strung together.” Great podcast so stoked for season two!

John Imperio

Herbie was sooo much cooler than the Waymo fleet self-roaming the streets of San Francisco!

Andrew Hageman

Yes, we had a piracy issue so we had to disable downloads.

Video Archives Podcast

Gala & Crew, do you have any more spaghetti westerns up your sleeve this season?

Jacob Denney 🇨🇦

Alan Hume has an insane CV. Bond, Hammer, Return of the Jedi, the Carry Ons... I know Quentin is afraid of watching the Carry Ons, but come on...

George White

Correction - Keye Luke was Mr. Wong (played by Karloff), because Karloff (who was Asian but South Asian/Indian) was too busy doing the Ape, and he had ran out of his Monogram contract. However, Keye Luke appeared in a Mr. Moto as Number One Son, trhough, becxause there's a Mr. Moto film that began shooting as a Charlie Chan, Warner Oland died, and Mr. Moto/Lorre was brought in, and Lee Chan was made his sidekick for that film.

George White

Woo! Stoked for the new episode. Thanks for all the great content.

Timothy Noddings

I'm really looking forward to the conversation about "The Love Bug". I saw the film six months ago with my children (7 and 9) and we had a lot of fun. I'm curious to see what Gala, Roger and Quentin say about Robert Stevenson. I only know his Disney films, but I think they're all great.

Michael Mohrdiek

Ugh, did you have to disable downloads? I love listening to these on hikes and need to, sadly

mm

And I told the staff at NewBev too back in oh nineteen August

Gonzojoey

Watchmen comic sequel DOOMSDAY CLOCK takes place IN the NewBev and has similar story line as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Also it was released in the same month .
