You can see the soot balls, or Makkuro Kurosuke also in My Neighbor Totoro. I used to rewatch that movie so many times as a kid. The tiny colorful star food given to them is called Konpeitou, a sugar candy. I remember I asked my mom for one after I saw this movie.
Plain rice balls usually are only salted for the flavor.
No-face creeped the hell out of me as a kid and gave me nightmares.

Since it's been awhile, so I don't know if you'll see this comment, but just things I wanted to note in case you do read them.
I hope you watch other Ghibli movies! (Ghibli is pronounced Jib-lee, although in Japanese it is actually Ji-bu-ri)
Many of the famous Ghibli movies are made by Miyazaki Hayao and music composed by Hisaishi Joe. Their combination always makes the movies so great. Miyazaki has retired in the past, but is back for one last movie dedicated to his grandson. It's planned to be released later this year. It's supposed to be a farewell gift to his grandon as he is old now, so basically saying "grandpa will be going away soon but here is a movie he left behind". His son has been releasing movies under Studio Ghibli now and keeping the legacy.

Btw I watched Spirited Away on Netflix with Japanese audio. But there were many differences in the eng sub there and here. Though I think I liked this version better. Idk.

The English dub is fine but Japanese voice actors are just on another level.
It definitely needs multiple watches but itβs also fun to come up with your own theories and read about other peopleβs! and it helps growing up in or around Japanese culture to understand more of the nuances and finer details but this also helps to not lost in the seeming chaos of it all. Like the way we just come to accept that yep itβs a spirit/god or like yeah of course it can do that itβs a spirit/god. So we donβt really get caught up in some of these details while watching it. Also fun fact the reason her name is now Sen is because in Japanese the way you read characters sometimes changes depending on the context/other characters in the word. So her first name chihiro is spelt εε°γthe first character in this case is chi because it is paired with the other character. Yubaba took all of the characters except for ε. The Japanese title translates to Sen and Chihiroβs Spiriting Away and it sounds wondrous when you think of being spirited away like on an adventure with spirits but itβs an actual term to refer to mysterious deaths or disappearances because you did something to anger the spirits/gods. And because thereβs a lot of different gods in Shintoism itβs best to live a moral life to prevent angering any of them. Like donβt be greedy, respect others, help your family etc.
I remember watching this movie again in middle school but this time with my friend and while we were watching the stairs part she had the most ridiculous thought: what if running is just us falling and our legs constantly trying to keep us upright.
