Nayuta sat near the back, still and composed, her school uniform immaculate, white shirt buttoned, black skirt just brushing her knees, dark socks hugging her thighs. Her gaze, distant, traced the falling light slanting through the tall windows.
She had no real reason to be distracted. Yet today, the words on the board blurred, the professor’s voice droned like wind.
She was bored.
Until he walked in.
Late, of course. Same posture, same hesitant steps, like he never quite got used to new places. Her eyes followed him without moving her head. Her fingers, idly twirling a pen, paused.
He sat two rows down.
Close enough for her to feel the shift in the air.
She didn’t speak. Neither did he. But at some point, he glanced back. Just once. A flicker.
And for the first time all day, a corner of her mouth lifted, almost imperceptibly.
Makima didn’t believe in coincidences. But as the air thickened between quiet breaths and shared glances, she let herself wonder…
Maybe today wasn’t about boredom after all...
講義室は、気の置けない雑談とペンを回す音でざわめいていた。那由多は後ろの方に座っていた。静かに、落ち着いていた。制服は完璧に整えられ、白いシャツのボタンは留められ、黒いスカートは膝に軽く触れ、黒い靴下は太ももにぴったりとフィットしていた。遠くを見つめる視線は、高い窓から斜めに差し込む光を追いかけていた。
気を散らすようなことは特になかった。しかし今日は、黒板の文字はぼやけ、教授の声は風のように鈍い。
退屈だった。
彼が入ってくるまでは。
もちろん、遅刻だ。いつもと同じ姿勢、いつもとりとめのない足取り。まるで新しい場所になかなか慣れないみたいだった。彼女は頭を動かさずに、視線を彼を追っていた。ペンをくるくる回す彼女の指は、少しの間止まった。
彼は二列後ろに座った。
空気の変化が感じられるほど近くに。
彼女は口を開かなかった。彼も。しかし、ある時、彼は振り返った。一度だけ。かすかな光。
そして、今日初めて、彼女の口角がかすかに上がった。ほとんど気づかれないほどに。
マキマは偶然を信じていなかった。しかし、静かな息づかいと視線が交わされる合間に空気が重くなるにつれ、彼女はふと疑問に思った…
もしかしたら、今日は退屈な日ではないのかもしれない。
