The fire is burning...

Sometimes, these updates are a little hard to write, a little choked by feelings of failing to deliver good enough returns on your kind investment in me. I feel it's often better to keep working, rather than pop up only to say "Hey, I'm still making stuff", but today is different and I'm too inspired and excited to stay quiet...

Work is slowly coming to a close on the 100+ page Starbarians graphic novel. It's taking longer than I'd ever hoped (doesn't it always?) but it should be finished in early September. It represents the most ambitious story I've ever told, close in spirit to a three-act blockbuster film with heart, depth, twists and stupid jokes in abundance. This is not a short or a gag, it's an adventure.

I'm very happy with the work my colourists Ben Sawyer and Joyce Oder are doing for the book. Colouring 100 pages is no easy feat, and the richness and verve they are imbuing these alien worlds and characters with is bringing them to life. 14 pages were pencilled and inked ready for colour this month, and now only 35 of the 100+ pages remain! 35 pages more and the story will finally be ready for its audience... and I want MORE!

The 300lb trunk-snouted Killgarian in the room is... I need to finish Starbarians Episode 4 and Dr Bees Forever once the book is done. There is no dignity in letting these projects go un-finished for so long, and they are my next goal. Ideally they would both be released by the years' end.

After that, a change has to take place. I want to tell more stories as ambitious as the one presented in the graphic novel, and not just on the page, but on the screen. The completion of this graphic novel should not herald a return to infrequent animated shorts or similar small-scope projects, unless those projects actually move things forward. I don't talk about it much, but for years my desire has been to produce a 90 minute feature film. I aim to start pre-producing that film in 2025 and self fund it.

For that reason, the Patreon is staying open for the foreseeable future, and there will likely be more crowdfunded projects happening in 2025 as part of this larger strategy. With any luck, 2026 could see production beginning on my feature-length directorial debut, but there is a lot of work remaining in 2024 and 2025 to make that happen.
