So I'm guessing that his character is around the same age 24-26 which means he probably hasn't been to the military yet. You can, if I understand it correctly, go whenever you want (as long as it's before you turn 29) so he might have been... But I don't think so. The "picking up shell casings" was also a reference to the military. That's why they said that korean men are so good at it.

The man was 'confronting the killers' remember? The LAST thing he needed was his phone ringing, distracting him, and giving away his position." Cho Young: "We're partners, so we should share danger." Me: "You would've just been in the way and gotten yourself killed..." On another note... If Cho Young's entire dialogue for this scene doesn't strike you as the most typical, unreasonable wife/girlfriend lines you've ever heard, I don't know what will...
