i really like dismembering in my dnd, but ive kinda got a couple stipulations to it. like youve gotta have sort of an honor system for everyone not to always attack limbs bc while yeah, it is "optimal", its not a thing anyone would actually do in combat 99% of the time. its just an extension of not metagaming really. the other thing is to have ways to restore whatevers cut off, be it healing magic, prosthetics like chips pinky, or smth else

2022-12-31 18:03:36 +0000 UTCI’m brand new to DMing and my party is brand new to playing. In the first real boss fight my brother’s character took so much damage, due to losing control of his blood bending powers that were granted to him by the Blood Maykr that he lost an arm. So yeah I’ve told my players anything is on the table, I am not afraid to kill their characters, mutilate them or kill lovable NPCs. But I didn’t know the system shock table was a thing so I will be using it from now on.

2022-12-29 21:57:43 +0000 UTCAt my table, once it's introduced, we can then incorporate it with NPC's and enemies. For example, when one of our players learned to cast fly, we then had flying enemies. With limbs cutting off (which did happen once), the player had a hand in their inventory. Ew. (This now has introduced our limbs being cut off- uh oh. Otherwise, we run with this rule: If you create a character with a natural disadvantage (i.e. a permanent limp due to a bad knee, -5 to movement pool), you will be given one additional boon at the DM's discretion (i.e. +1 additional skill proficiency). This also goes for losing limbs, etc. in game :}

2022-12-26 00:24:50 +0000 UTCI would personally rule targeting a limb as a more difficult target by increasing the AC of the specific limb and/or imposing disadvantage. For removing a limb, I would consider a damage threshold necessary, almost as if the limb had its own hit point total despite the damage still applying to the enemy as a whole. (By this I mean to imply that further effort toward amputation would eventually add up.) Attempting such a feat could also be ruled to have a drawback regarding actual damage output. For instance, if a character actively targets only the enemy's ear, a portion of the damage might apply to the severed appendage as opposed to the enemy, especially if the damage is more than sufficient to separate the two. Not all would be negated, but it might be lessened since the target of the attack is no longer a part of the enemy, in the same way attacking a severed limb would not harm the person it was once attached to. I wouldn't have a clue what to do if someone wanted to cut an enemy's hair off.
