2022-03-23 14:44:29 +0000 UTCThe idea of “if you could remove this character and the story would run the same, then they aren’t well written” is perfect here. Besides dealing huge damage, the only moments I can remember of that not being the case is her convincing Chip to help the town in Loffinlot, and her trying to mediate in episode 15 and giving Gil the idea to prank Chip then. I care a lot less if Condi plays a passive character tbh. That’s why Vyncent doesn’t really bother me. But I really really love Jay and all the possibilities and concepts she has, and so it annoys me that they’re not being used to their full potential. In fact the passiveness that she exhibits makes me love her more because it creates a character flaw that she can get over. I relate to that a ton and I just want her to y’know feel confident as herself and not be afraid of being free and follow her own path and y’know be happy ;-;. Her whole story is already full of these themes, and that’s another reason it annoys me, because any resolution to these themes is gonna be shallow and unfulfilling if she’s passive all the time! I think I just have a love-hate relationship lol. I also like to make ic explanations for things that may be the fault of the narrative. I mean I’ve already made a ton of headcanons about this, as shown above.

2021-09-01 21:38:21 +0000 UTCI feel like I have read that tumblr post that your referring too, but myself made a similar post about that same thing. Jay seems kinda... passive at times? I’ve made a similar post on that topic as well, and it seems in my opinion (aside from some funny bits here and there) that it is the same with Vyncent. Jay and Vyn both seem to have prominent roles when the GM throws them into the spotlight like with Vyn’s deals, or Jay literally being held at gunpoint. . There is this idea I keep going back in fiction (which kinda works for this I guess) is the fact if you can remove a character and the story will run the same way then that simply isn't a well written character, but in the case if a TTRPG is that Jay simply isn't active enough in the story. Condi mentioned something along the lines of not knowing how to play Jay on a stream once and is trying to figure it out, but that was a bit ago, so I understand it when it comes to that. I mean, it doesn’t change that Jay is passive, and in my opinion so is Vyncent, but nothing can be done with that at this point.

2021-08-24 21:51:39 +0000 UTCI feel like Jay really doesn’t make a lot of her own choices. This is especially noticeable in the paramount tournament when she goes along with a lot of what Chip wants- like she decided to throw because he wanted to (and she wanted gold), and she decided to not throw immediately when he did. The thing that really got me though was when Chip took Gil’s necklace and Jay just side-eyed him and watched. She knew her friend was not just being deceived, but actively sabotaged in something that was incredibly important to him and did nothing. If y’all wanna criticize Chip for deceiving Gil and not respecting his values, you’re going to have to criticize Jay as well. She doesn’t have a lot of friction with the rest of the group like Gil and Chip do with each other , and I think that’s because she just doesn’t have a set of goals/morals/actions that conflict with theirs. In fact it’s hard to find any goals/morals/actions besides being free, helping people when she can, and staying away from the navy. My theory for this is that Jay still has a hard time standing up for herself. She may have been constantly told to obey in the navy/her family, as military family’s/training often do. She might be following Chip because she’s subconsciously looking for someone to follow. Because that’s what she was taught to do and not having that makes her feel uneasy. She was also probably drilled with navy ideals and The Navy Personality all her life. She’s still trying to figure out who she is apart from all of that, and she doesn’t have as good of a sense of self or beliefs as Chip and Gil do. And breaking out of the beliefs you were taught in childhood and finding who you are outside of that is an ENOURMOUS feat. It makes sense that she doesn’t have as strong of an identity because she’s still trying to form her own. And we don’t even know how bad it was for her- it could be anything from passive influence to abuse and indoctrination. She’s still following the patterns she learned in childhood, and that’s understandable. Also, recovery from this stuff is never linear. Just because she left doesn’t mean she’s over it. Does it excuse her? Absolutely not. But it makes sense. So yeah that’s my Jay Ferin analysis. Her lack of agency was really bothering me for a while so I had to write about it
