Yes you'll find these transition episodes occasionally as we come from a big arc but the main things here were to catch you up to speed on what they know so far about Titans, as well as give brief intros to the scouts. Hange is ALOT lol but she's lovable and her passion also makes her a fierce warrior as we've seen before because she doesn't not fear them like the others. There is a lot of reading between the lines, some convos seem random but they have specific purposes. The expedition is what Commander Erwin is preparing for with his map and everything. They like Eren so they need his first mission with them to be a success not only for Eren's sake but for the Scouts as well because the scouts last expedition had them coming back to town in bloody pieces and with a lot less soldiers than they left with. If you remember them strolling through the town when Eren and co were watching from the crowd and the mother was asking about her son and all the scouts had left to give her was his arm... So yeah they don't want another situation like that, they are hoping Eren could be their key to success. The last main thing was the murder of Sonny & Bean, first of all why? Then who? And Commander Erwin left Eren & the audience with the question of, who do you think the real enemy here is? That's all for now, onward more greatness to come!
