I'm a year late but the writers originally planned for Sun and Michael to get together since Jin was abusive. But they changed directions when they saw the chemistry between Sun and Jin in their flashbacks, and the positive audience response to them. I'm glad they did because S&J are amazing together and S&M just weren't, the chemistry wasn't there for them. Plus this way we get Jin's amazing redemption arc.
