Ok, I very sincerely need to ask how familiar y’all are with the original Star Wars, specifically the first movie (“A New Hope” - episode 4,) because this episode was filled with tasty Easter eggs for Star Wars nerds. 😁 Here are a few:
- Mando landed his ship (the Razor Crest) in the Mos Eisley Spaceport on Tatooine.
- Tatooine is Luke’s home planet and after Luke meets Ben Kenobi, they go to Mos Eisley to find a pilot and ship to take them to Alderaan (home planet of Princess Leia.)
- The cantina that Mando enters to inquire about work is THE Cantina, from Star Wars. The kid he meets is sitting in the same exact booth where we first meet Han Solo and where Han shoots Greedo! (Han shot FIRST!)
- The lady helping with his ship, played by Amy Sedaris, admonishes Mando a bit for leaving a young child behind — remember, Mando saved the child, but that doesn’t mean he understands yet what caring for him entails - but he’s learning.
- The lady they were hunting was named Fennec Shand. While tracking her they encounter Tuscan Raiders - which we first saw in Star Wars — but this is the first time we have seen someone use a type of hand signal/sign language to actually communicate with them. In Star Wars they just made the unforgettable “reeeeeehhhhhh rehhh rehh” sounds.
- At the end, someone approaches Fennec. We don’t know who that is, but if you listen closely, you can hear what sounds like “spurs” with each step the mysterious figure takes. If you are a HUGE Star Wars nerd, (like me,) this sound is significant. There is only one character in all of Star Wars that wears spurs. These spurs are first seen and heard in “The Empire Strikes Back.”
Oh, and Ralph... Shamonda may not recall the voice of the person playing Mando, because when we last heard this person speaking they were using a heavy Spanish accent. 😉
Thanks for a fun reaction... a lot of the character establishment is now falling away to focus more on plot advancement. 😎
