EP 50: IS THIS HAPPENING?

It should be expected that much of this episode is about the election. However, some of it is also about Shawn Mendes, homoeroticism in pop music, and Smile 2. We love y'all

Thanks to Slic for the music.

Also by culturally south, I mean like in lifestyle- we’re a little country but in the cutesy way.

Sydni Hampton

I know this old but Louisville, KY believe it or not is pretty incredible. Yeah, red state WAH WAH but Louisville is culturally south but more progressive than the south. Our governor has repeatedly committed to protecting queer and trans people in KY, we have our own Pride Center, two different Pride organizations, some of the best drag in the country (I’m a little biased!) and the queer community is diverse, cool and powerful. It’s incredibly affordable compared to many other cities like it.

Sydni Hampton

lol as a black marylander the white ppl are... special ill say that but if ur not in a homogenous area its nice! if you value proximity to other states etc and temperate weather

Gabby Chery

Western mass mention!!!

Tracey Paige

Very white lib coded

Avery

yeah vermont’s nice if you live in the area surrounding burlington and we’re one of the bluest states in the country but there’s not really much of anything to do here ESPECIALLY if you live outside of chittenden county

Ethan

it is a really great place to live; rent is higher than it used to be but it is still WAY more affordable than most cities

soph

another podcast girl i listen to lives there and is doing well affording a house working as a waitress

mae

second this!! massachusetts is sooooo expensive for no reason

anna

Regarding getting estrogen for ...other purposes... a lot of post-menopause women take estrogen / the same HRT trans women take.

soph

This might sound insane but I love Kansas City, Missouri. We have a very active and established trans and drag scene, lots of queer people, and the city is very blue— my girlfriend and I are very open and public and never have had any problems with discrimination and even the mainstream vibe of the city champions trans women— we have a Taylor Swift inpersonator who is a Japanese trans woman who is always being endorsed and supported by the football team and local news; she kind of runs the city. Also the fact that it is a state that does have quite a few Republicans in it outside of the cities makes everyone very strong in their solidarity with each other and understand grassroots organizing and centering black voices. We also have multiple colleges, are a huge arts city, and have a lot of grassrootgrassroots Palestinian activists. The whole city is just very diverse and very real. EDIT: AND riverboat culture is Missouri culture! We have a steamboat museum here in the city by the river market! And we just voted to raise minimum wage and will have the 2nd highest minimum wage in the country by 2026. Also weed is legal.

I work in most of the major grocery stores in the Everett area and there is never a dull moment. As crazy as it is, there's a lot of really awesome, kind people in the area as well!

flyingrat

kay would HAAAATE portland (i live here lol)

k-lee

plssss what is this Baltimore slander 😭

Abby K

All I could do was cry. Went to work the next day and cried with my coworkers. I wish I could say it’s hard to believe that he could be elected again. I am so scared for the next 4 years and honestly every year going forward.

costco_hotcock

laughed out loud at alexs “not that theres anything wrong with that”

Sierra McCoy

Everett mentioned 🎉

Bryce3dKeygen.midi

the whole shawn mendes segment i couldn’t stop thinking about bruce springsteen

gm

Providence Rhode Island, the creative capital of—- it’s queer as hell, we call it gay Boston and you can find really cheap rent, train away from NYC and Boston. Renters rights are on the tenants side, i have found fantastic queer/trans healthcare and public assistance 😘

Cara

okok i know the stereotypes of portland, or but...... honestly it's a beauuuutiful place to live hiking and camping and foraging wise and the food scene is unbelievable !!!

S K

as someone who lives there, massachusetts is full of very friendly people! western mass can be a bit more conservative but boston and eastern mass/the cape is very LGBTQ+ friendly :)

padraig

I visited Denver once and loved it, I'd totally move to Denver.

flyingrat

he's a smaller artist but Babymorocco is doing the gay popstar thing well rn. he's beefy and sexy and knows it, so hes aspirational in that sense. most of his audience are gay guys cuz hes muscular. he was vague about his sexuality for a while but has since been sorta open about being bisexual. he makes electropop/rave music and it goes with his eurotrash scally Zyzz aesthetic. with shawn mendes tho, it'll never work not just cuz he seems eunuch-ish, but cause his music is very Starbucks pop radio and nothing past bearable.

slushygushy

I live in WA & I love it. I wouldn't recommend a rural town in Washington though. There are a buttload of conservatives in my small town, lots of trump flags. I'd say stick to the cities but I also did just see a man running naked in the rain in Everett at 8am this morning. So the cities can be a little rough as well. Overall I do love the state. Bellingham is beautiful, I'd love to move up there some day.

flyingrat

sam uses they/them btw

slushygushy

You've touched on this before, the downward spiral of both Grimes and MIA. I really liked both artists and it's sucked watching them change into who they are now. MIA seems like she fell down a bad pipeline which is disappointing but I think Grimes knew what she was doing in shacking up with Elon. I honestly find her so annoying at this point. MIA, I'm concerned for. Grimes just sucks.

flyingrat

I moved to Oregon 5 years ago, came from Texas. It is beautiful and I personally love the weather. Bend, Oregon is beautiful (but expensive). Though, I stand by that Washington is a better state to live in overall. Job market is better and there are so many more livable places that are not the big major cities, unlike Oregon.

sydney

Second this.

sydney

Orville Peck hearing y’all describe the perfect gay pop star: 👂🏼👁️👄👁️👂🏼

Dylan

I made the horrendous decision to move out of New England to the midwest and I’ve wanted to go back ever since

Dylan

come to brasiilllllll (somewhere in california, there is so much to do here and very delicious mexican food !!)

Guelly

Divas, Maine is all crazy cold white people :((( like no diversity no people of color

GiGi

come live in richmond VA, its a super queer city & theres so many really beautiful nature spots its truly a hidden gem, ive lived here for a year & a half from nj/ny & i loveee it

Lia

i'm currently living in seattle and while it's nice to see more fellow black/ brown ppl, the brand of white person up here is annoying as shit sometimes

Laurel lakoundji

I live in PNW btw- self directed shade

Madeleine

Wouldn’t Denver be cool? Idk you’re probably gonna have to deal with snow with most of these areas unless you go to PNW or CA (which you guys would probably hate)

Madeleine

honestly y’all would fuck with albuquerque and it’s still close enough to texas if alex’s family stays there

Temperance

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILER Guys ily but what r you TALKING ab?? They’re totally gonna go full apocalyptic for smile 3. I’d bet money on it. They’ve created the perfect conditions for a full on smile universe. It’s literally gonna be all those people at the concert running around with the demon and it’s gonna spread like a zombie virus or some shit.

Navilyn West

Vermont is so fucking expensive, but worth it for the seclusion, as someone who has lived here my whole life. However, there is not SHIT to do here unless you’re in the “big”ger cities (and even then there’s not much to do. And you’re guaranteed to get seasonal depression in the winter. That being said, y’all are the type of out of staters that the country folks wouldn’t complain about. And as a bonus, no matter how mang republicans there are in the state, our reps always vote blue.

Rat Maddie

If the bisexual rumors are true 2hollis might be our next gay pop star

Siak

i think it’s so interesting that when yall were talking about huge gay pop stars the whole thing i was just thinking about sam smith!! 😭😭 he’s been around for a minute now st this point and he fs made his pop diva turning point i remember when it was a huge thing that his marketing completely changed. i wonder what he’s up to 🥸

Abbyyy

Philly baybeeee

jawn

just was coming here to say this

jawn

Upstate NY 🫶 Syracuse & albany are cheap-ish and cute ❤️❤️

Jimmy

Y'all should look into NM, blue state with relatively low cost of living. I haven't lived there, but I have some friends with family there that speak really highly of it. I live north of Seattle, it's so unbelievably beautiful here and compared to the rest of the US is about as LGBTQ+ friendly as it gets, but the cost of living is high and there are a lot of annoying white people. Living 20 minutes away from orcas is pretty fucking cool tho.

Avery

I’ll fight for my trans sisters no matter WHAT

Madison O

CHICAGO!!!!

Hannah Lichtenstein

I moved to mass from Texas in 2021, and I've met 10x more out trans people than I ever did in Texas for obvious reasons. I'll be for real though it's expensive but wages are way way higher than tx. Plus Worcester has one of the few actual lesbian bars in the country (Femme). Also I looked into doing firewatch and they usually want you to have your own 4x4 😭

Cell

ooo… nvm

Nia Washington

Burlington Vermont 🌈

Nia Washington

I lived in Chicago until I was 24, I love that city so damn much 💕 there’s an amazing comedy and improv scene, so many shows and nightlife, very lgbtq+ friendly, very diverse, apartments are relatively affordable, cute parks. Great public transportation where you might not even need a car, or just share one. Logan square, Pilsen, ukrainian vilage, & Bridgeport are great neighborhoods to look into. Minneapolis is also cool, I have family there, less knowledge about the city tho. You just gotta prepare yourself for looooong winters

Candy

What I mean is thank you Alex and Kay for the episode I love you

Sash

How do we not kill ourselves guys also do any of y’all know how to do bottom surgery with scissors and super glue?

Sash

Horrible. I can definitely imagine. I hope your friend is in a better area now!!! yeah it’s not a safe place imo.

Ray

philly...?

salem

I was gonna share the same sentiments. Had a friend who lived there and she told me some wilddddd shit that went down

Tiff

I lived in southern Maine/Portland for a bit it is absolutely beautiful but it is very rural in some places and very white

Claire

Massachusetts has the exact same white people as Maryland if not worse I’m ngl. As a former East coaster

Ray

It’s also very diverse area in race and class. Minnesota obviously has its own problems but I do recommend checking it out. Also so much actual community work that isn’t infested with rabid college students wanting to rip each others eyes out over every political discussion. Okay byeeeee I hope this is helpful!

Ray

Minnesota has the most trans people I’ve even been surrounded by in my life. I go to a 7 garage trans owned cat car shop called turbo Tim’s that is trans owned and operated and has cats you can adopt in the office lol. There is a real trans community here unlike anything I’ve ever experienced plus amazing trans healthcare and good legal protections for trans people. Ik a lot of trans women who moved her from Florida recently. And I am trans masculine and just moved from NYC. I hope you find the place that is right for you both 💜🫂

Ray

Come to Chicago!!

Emma McCloud

Y’all are the best

Bridget Bonasoro

To Kay and Alex, idk if you've tried it already but a google sheet/excel sheet could help you compare the places you're considering moving to. You can compare factors like cost of living, climate, crime rates, etc. Hope this is helpful!

brvwniebite

OO, also, there's a revival here in North GA that doesn't move. They just stay by the same river and the cult leader does baptismal "healing" on people. I find it confusing because I grew up in the 80s/90s when revivals were defined by their traveling.

Emmet

Y'all are so real for this.

Emmet

Needed this on the way to work today 😪 can't wait to hear the Smile 2 review!!
