Something a lot of people get confused about which is totally understandable - why did Jack have to push the button? Based on what we've seen so far - he didn't have to. Like Sayid said, "This argument is irrelevant". However, John wanted to get Jack on his side and because the time was ticking down and the pressure was on this was a good opportunity to get Jack invested. They've had arguments in the past, especially in the season one finale with John saying Jack is a man of science whereas John is a man of faith. John could have easily pushed the button but he wanted Jack to do it because even though his faith is strong he needs somebody else to join in with him. Boone was a good "disciple" but he's gone now. John needs somebody else to see what he sees. Whether he's right or wrong is a different story, but whatever mission he thinks he's on, he can't do it alone.
