It's not just ego. Walt has lost his family, his wife and he has cancer. He has nothing left but the chance to correct one of the biggest mistakes of his life selling his part of a billion dollar company so he's not going to stop no matter what. It's all he has left before he dies. I sympathize with him.

Walt is all about what he thinks he is owed. He talks about Grey Matter, but what he cannot come to grips with is that the company became worth billions after his departure and he had nothing to contribute to that, but the name. He started the company, but other people made it what it was and the meth business is his way of redemption, to prove his worth. Everyone (including his family) are just pawns in the process.
