Folklore and Midnights aren’t breakup albums as much as they are “wrestling” albums- wrestling with leaving the relationship, with not feeling loved enough, wrestling with a loss of hope and thoughts of breaking up, or breaking up only to have the “plane turn back around” - I think dear reader is about feeling like she’s living a lie. Pretending she and Joe are ok when really she/the relationship is a mess behind the scenes. I also had a thought! A lyric I’ve contemplated a lot is “your finger on my *hairpin* trigger” from the Great War- could that mean his suspicious behavior putting her within a millimeter of swearing off men for good because he’s confirming her fear that guys can’t be trusted? Just an idea :)

2024-02-20 04:33:45 +0000 UTCThe more I think about it I absolutely think the words on the promo images/back covers (?) released are Joe’s and not Taylor’s. “I love you it’s ruining my life.” “You don’t get to tell me about sad.” Both seem like direct quotes from him.
