Glad I watched it again with you! One of the greatest sci-fi novels written and now one of the best movie adaptations.

I adore Frank Herbert's Dune series -- It's like my cat nip. I also love these movies and cannot wait for Part Three to arrive. These movies were so good to watch in IMAX! Thanks for giving me another reason to watch them again, Mary.

So many things you can say about this movie, but to me the music is just on another level. The way that Paul's theme shifts darker and angrier after we find out he is a Harkonnen is *chef's kiss*.
You mentioned feeling bad for the actor for Baron Harkonnen getting cast for that role. He does not actually look like that IRL - he had 50kg of prosthetics to make him look like that. You've seen that actor in several things including Good Will Hunting, Chernobyl, the first Thor movie, and a very small role in The Hunt for Red October. He's also in Andor, which you should absolutely watch at some point.

Mary, part 1 and 2 are just the first book and there's like 6 books in the original series, and even more prequel books and other things. I haven't read them, but I have a rough idea what happens. Obviously not going to spoil what I do know though. Hans Zimmer absolutely cooked with this movie, in fact, the piece that plays at the end entitled "Kiss the Ring" IMO is one of his best pieces, it's an absolutely incredible piece of music - there are documentaries for both movies where he talks about the score which are worth seeing. On the third movie in this series, it's due out IIRC late next year.
One thing to know about Dune is that it was hugely inspired by the history/mythos of T. E. Lawrence aka Lawrence of Arabia, obviously dressed up heavily in science fiction and changed a bit but, when you hear spice think "oil" and consider the setting of WW1 and the Ottoman Empire in the Middle East and you're well on your way to understanding the setting that inspired the whole thing. Lawrence of Arabia is a legendary movie in its own right winning 7 Oscars and is well worth seeing, and is based on TEL's book that is one of the biggest inspirations for Dune, Seven Pillars of Wisdom.
