What’s funny is if such a thing happened when this film took place, the aliens would’ve died sooner. The reason being was at that time, unknown to the public, all the major nations like the US, UK, Russia, etc., all had bioweapons programs. I highly doubt in such a situation that would’ve never at least attempted to use such weapons against alien invaders.

Both War of the Worlds movies are adaptations of a novel by H.G. Wells, so the 2005 Tom Cruise film isn't exactly a remake, but a different interpretation of the source material. It was Cruise's second collaboration with Steven Spielberg, after Minority Report.
There was a famous urban legend that Orson Welles, director and star of Citizen Kane, directed a radio broadcast of War of the Worlds that people misinterpreted as an authentic news report, and believed aliens were invading. However, while Welles did do a famous radio broadcast adaptation of the story, I'm pretty sure there's no evidence that this story is actually true.
"Gizmo" is very similar to "gadget." It means "device." Also, despite the spelling, "colonel" is pronounced the same as "kernel."
Would echo several of Bammer's recommendations, namely The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951), The Thing From Another World (1951), Them! (1954), This Island Earth (1955), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), The Fly (1958), and The Time Machine (1960). Some of these I haven't seen but it would be fun to watch more classic movies with you. The Thing From Another World is based on the same book as John Carpenter's The Thing, but don't let that scare you -- the older version is no more intense or violent than this or Forbidden Planet, and the threat is interpreted much differently.
