The Expanse - Season 5 episode 2 [Early access]

Comments

“It’s just like walking in pumps” “How do you know how to walk in pumps?” “I didn’t always work in space…” That line was funny in the moment but really takes a dark turn after you see this episode…

Jordan Butterworth

Spot on. Also, the short story explains why Amos is legitimately attracted to Aversarala. In the short story, Lydia is described as Persian, not white and blonde like in the show. With Amos history with Lydia, he has a legitimate attraction to Aversarala.

Based on the references to life events that you've mentioned here and there during your reactions, I'm guessing that you actually watched this stuff a while back, and maybe even finished the show, so I figure I can mention this here -- it's not really a spoiler so much as a clarification. As you know, the writers of this show try to live by the "show, don't tell" rule and they avoid clunky exposition in their dialog, so this was never completely spelled out. For the record, then -- much of this has been mentioned here and there over the course of the four prior seasons, but it can be hard to put it all together into one cohesive story -- Lydia is not Amos' mother, but she was a mother figure to him; she raised him from an early age after his real mother was killed. Lydia and Amos' birth mother were both sex workers; the "real" Amos Burton was indeed a mob boss (remember Monica mentioned that's what she turned up when she tried to find info about our Amos in Baltimore?) who ran a prostitution ring among other things. Timothy/Amos was (as Charles mentioned, and as Amos also obliquely mentioned to Prax when they were speaking in Roma/Chicken Guy's place) forced into sex work when he was younger, eventually transitioning to an enforcer role when he got old enough that the "Johns didn't want him anymore." Erich was another street kid, like Timothy, who came of age around the same time. They were not biological brothers, but they were brothers in the "found family" sense, growing up in the same environment and around the same age, and both working for Amos Burton. Erich had a talent for various criminal things, particularly computer hacking, but was careless in one job and ended up endangering Burton's gang. So Burton ordered Timmy to kill Erich, but Lydia talked him out of it. Instead, Timothy conspired with Erich to turn the tables on Burton -- Timmy killed Amos Burton instead of killing Erich. Erich inherited Burton's criminal enterprise and Timmy, with the help of Erich's forgery skills, got Amos Burton's name, as well as a spot in the vocational training lottery for a job off planet. And the rest is history, more or less. This whole story (in much more heartbreaking detail) is told in the James S.A. Corey novella The Churn, which is available in print (as part of the "Memory's Legion" short story collection) and also in audiobook form. Most people who've read the books count it among their favorite Expanse short stories. If you want to know more about Amos' origin, that's the place to go.
