If you do want to learn more about good ole Amos there is a novella called, "The Churn" that gets into details about his past.
As far as Lydia it is easy to miss but Amos brings her up all the way back in S2 with the mad scientist talk.
He tells the guy that his mother died a long time ago but then there was Lydia. The scientist says, "Who?" and he says they were someone that took care of them.
Then there's that awful part where Amos brings up his childhood of being in a basement in S5 about how "they" came after he woke up in the dark.
