the idea of fusion reactors exploding though is one of the bigger liberties this show takes with physics. it's just impossible. fusion reactors don't work that way. it's extremely difficult to get energy out of it, much less more than you intend, much less more than you can contain, much less massive explosions that destroy ships or even entire islands.

So Mary I know you showed some interest in Ashford's baby, so I wanted to remind you of something he said back in Season 3. Note that in the clip in this episode it shows him without scars like he has 'today'. "I’ve drunk real Earth whiskey out of a UN Admiral’s mug, and then scuttled her ship. I flew dark past a Martian battle group, and they never even knew I was there. And I’ve seen friends breathe the vacuum, and watched my only child burn. So when I tell you to tread carefully, you would do well to stop talking."

I've been waiting for you to get to this episode. After first watching this episode, out of curiosity, I decided to research just how big the explosion was. In the show, they said the explosion was approximately 50,000 exajoules. That's equal to an 11,950.29 gigaton bomb, or a 11,950,290 megaton bomb. The largest bomb ever detonated in human history was the Tsar Bomb. It had a maximum yield of 100 megatons, but out of fear that detonating it at its maximum yield would destroy the planet, they reduced it to approximately 50 megatons for the test. Which means the explosion of the alien fusion reactor was equal to approximately 239,005.8 Tsar bombs. That is absolutely terrifying, and is a display of only a fraction of a percent of the power wielded by the ring builders. Also, it's never mentioned in the show, but the books say the reason Ilus has so many large fusion reactors is that the planet is basically one giant power plant for multiple planets connected via the ring gates. The reason for this is the amount of lithium on Ilus and in its star system is higher than on any other planet/system in the ring gate network. That's also why one of the 12 moons melted: they are power transmitters that broke down trying to relieve some of pressure from all the reactors starting back up, but had nowhere to send all that energy.
