Such a wonderful interpretation of this movie! I completely align with everything you've said. The big thing that stuck out to me was Remmick's idea of unifying everyone together under his own Irish culture. He sees this as a way to create a "family" almost, and is convinced that turning everyone else into vampires and bringing them all together under his own cultural blanket is the secret to a heaven on earth. Yet in doing so, he would be stripping everyone else of their own cultural identities. And we saw an example of this when all the turned vampires were doing that Irish dance in unison. Ugh I could go on and on. Every time I rewatched this movie while editing, I appreciated the details more and more. - K

Loved it. There's honestly so much to say about it because of the genre-shifting. Like the movie continually shape-shifted. And it really worked. I didn't know going into it that it was directed by Ryan Coogler, who did the 'Black Panther' movies. Also 'Creed'. All have Michael B. Jordan in common. (I'm a big fan of the 'Rocky' franchise... one day I hope you'll watch those. 'Creed' is an extension of those.) While watching, it deeply reminded me of Robert Rodriguez & Tarantino's 'From Dusk Till Dawn'. It also reminded me of the old Devil at the Crossroads legend. About a famous Blues musician who supposedly sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads in a exchange for exceptional musical abilities, particularly on the guitar. I think it expands upon the idea of a devil, in this case vampires, being drawn by the rich, soul-bearing culture of music. How music is in the blood, in the soul... it's freedom... and it can't be just stripped away like everything else. That it can bind culturally and yet transcends time & culture. I have so many takeaways that I can't possibly put them all down. (Obviously the movie is largely allegorical for racism and identity.) But here are some of my immediate thoughts: 1) bigoted white men are even worse than vampires. 2) an Irish vampire, who had his own culture stripped from him, is doing the same to another group of people. But thinks he's actually their ally. 3) the Music really drives the narrative, celebrates the black community & spirit... it's freedom. 4) The color palettes for each twin really stood out.. one in red & one in blue. I noticed it thru out the whole movie. Seemed very symbolic of their natures. And their respective love interests, Annie and Mary were dressed in colors that matched them. Stack in red, Mary in pink, Smoke in blue, Annie in blue. 6) I think Mary, and possibly Stack also, snapped out of the hivemind when watching Smoke have to kill Annie. Mary cries out "Annie!" That and Stack facing his other half seemed to wake them up... allowing them to take off on their own and survive. The coda during the credits, with Sammie, Stack & Mary, was so satisfying. I didn't know I needed that. But it really filled me with a sort of lovely peace after all that loss.
