Stranger Things Season 3 Episode 8 (FINALE) - Uncut Reaction

Comments

Following up on the previous comment on episode 7, I think in this episode what was built up the whole season of El being pushed too far (by herself and by the group), comes home to roost and results in the outcome of El completely losing her powers. The gang may have a legitimate problem when it comes to “treating El like a machine, when she’s not a machine,” as Mike says, BUT I think it’s clear El also has a serious issue of taking on way more than she can handle. For example, El insists she can move the car, when the group is already working on it (albeit struggling), “I can do it.” All this while she is clearly injured and depleted. El is brave and selfless; of course she will want to use her powers to protect her loved ones when she’s the only one with the ability to do so. But in the example I gave, no one was in danger and someone else could have done the job without powers, so this isn’t bravery, this is actually a character flaw. BUT, that said, it’s completely understandable given her background if you dig into the psychology of her upbringing. She was raised being valued only for her abilities. She was given affection/love ONLY when she performed the way Papa wanted her to perform. If this is the environment you were raised in for the first 12 years of your life, would you not naturally believe that you still must use your abilities in order to earn your place/gain affection from your loved ones? I don’t think that kind of conditioning just goes away after a year and a half. To her it’s more of a survival instinct “I must use my powers or I have no role/no one will want me.” Yes, love and acceptance is something humans need to survive! That mindset was being inadvertently reinforced by the group relying on her to do the heavy lifting, which made her feel important to the group, unfortunately. It’s hard to blame any of the characters in this situation; the only one who seemed to sense this was going on was Mike, and he understandably couldn’t verbalize it very well. Sorry, that was a long one! Really enjoying the reactions, especially hearing Oliver's take on things from an author's perspective.

Hopper's letter to Eleven always gets me, it's so emotional but such wise words at the same time.
