Remember that “casual Disney princess” phase that took over the internet? Yeah… I was very much part of that trend. Not just as a kid, as an adult too. Because honestly? It’s fun!! Get over it!!
But now it’s spooky season, and my inner Tumblr-era self demands more. So in this video, I’m taking that same redesign obsession and turning it into something darker: Disney princesses as monsters.
I’m talking evil mermaids crawling out of the water, forest-dwelling Rapunzels whose hair hunts, and Mulan transformed into a half-dragon ghost. I give myself just 90 minutes to design and paint all three characters -- because time-boxing is the only thing that stops me from noodling forever. You’ll see my messy process, my experiments with horror colour palettes, and how I solve composition problems on the fly.
Along the way, I share my thoughts on:
🎨 How to make horror art without relying on dark palettes
🧠 Tricks for finishing art faster by focusing on silhouette, value, and mood
👻 Small storytelling details that instantly make a design feel creepier
Which monster princess would you design? Tell me in the comments -- I’ll read them all for inspiration for next year’s version. 👑💀
