Hey everyone! I’m so excited to share an early deep dive behind the scenes of Space Date 5 - the fifth chapter in this little space romance series that’s been a huge part of my life these past six months.
This BTS video breaks down all the big steps I went through, from those first super janky storyboards (like, really rough sketches that barely made sense) to tackling the crazy challenge of building 3D backgrounds in Blender for the very first time, and syncing everything with an original dad-rock inspired song made with friends.
I want to be real with you about how wild this ride has been: learning Blender from scratch was honestly terrifying at first. I had no idea what I was doing, but I just kept pushing because I wanted those backgrounds to feel alive and mesh perfectly with the 2D characters. There were so many frustrating moments where nothing worked, or rendering took forever, and I questioned if I could pull it off. But it forced me to get creative and be patient.
Managing a remote team of animators was also a whole other beast. Making sure everyone was on the same page with style, line weight, and character acting wasn’t easy, but seeing their amazing work come together was so rewarding. Plus, working with super talented artists on things like credits animation and FX really took the film to another level.
Throughout this whole process, I learned a lot about trusting my instincts, the power of collaboration, and that growth comes from struggle. It’s been exhausting and intense, but also unbelievably fulfilling.
Thank you so much for sticking with me and supporting this project. I can’t wait for you to see the final film on June 20th!
